My neighbor's cooking smells come through our common kitchen wall and it is a NIGHTMARE. This applies to whomever has occupied the unit over the years, so it isn't just what one family likes to cook. Whatever anyone cooks comes through the walls and fills my entire apartment with heavy odor.

This building has sheet rock walls and was built around WWII. I don't see any cracks in the walls, and I don't know what else to look for. I have "draft dodgers" on my door to the common hallway, and my kitchen window is always closed (with a storm window too). In my last place I had a similar problem with the upstairs neighbors (odors came through one of the closets somehow). These are older buildings without any vents or air conditioning/heating ducts.

I've lived in 3 or 4 Townhouses and none of them had this problem. Could that just be coincidence, or would a townhouse/row-type condo solve my problem? Is there any way to check for look for signs of this before moving in somewhere? Thank you.

maybe they'll deal with the cheap/broken old sheetmetal duct and fittings too. Maybe not.

Your stove and/or bathroom aren’t vented? A lot of times those could bring in smells. I have had that issue in some apartments.

Methinks we've got a bit of princess and pea situation here.
