Looking for a place to live,right in the middle of a housing crisis too,awesome. Anyway tried looking at USDA and FHA loans,but credit is less than 600 and also no huge amount of money to put down. So looking for rentals,but where can I go to find good deals on rentals without having to surf scammy craigslist etc? Rent.com is one of the few legit websites I've found...Zillow and some others seem to only retain the highest priced places so not going there. Any other ideas?

Perhaps you could get better guidance from your appropriate local forum that would fit your needs more closely.
I've had no problem looking on sites like Zillow and Realtor.com. But I don't look at rentals posted by individual owners, but rather at rentals posted by property management companies, where you'll have to register for an account on their website to apply, etc. Unfortunately, having a low credit score might start you off at a very bad position with such companies and you may have better luck with individual landlords, though you also may stand a higher chance of getting ripped off via such ads.
Fees for what? They charge the owner/LL fees, but there are no fees for potential renters. Look at mother-in-law units, contact local property management companies. Do both you and your wife work?
Not all LL's accept pets. How many pets, and what size are they?
Maybe it depends on where you live, but where I live, the property management companies will usually have a section on their website that shows which of their properties have vacancies. There is no fee associated with this (aside from an application fee if you're interested in the property) and I have no idea how they would justify one-- but I woudn't be surprised if such things are done in higher-COL/more crowded places.

I suspect the pets are where you're going to have a problem. Few places accept pets anymore; the ones who do usually have strict limits (like only one dog and often under a certain weight, one or maybe two cats, etc.), and tend to charge an extra fee each month. If you have more than one pet (unless maybe it's birds or fish), you might have a tough time finding a place.
