I had a friend as a room mate for about 6 months. It all ended when he decided to rip the thermostat OUT OF THE WALL just because the electric bill hit $80 for the previous month. He also stole from my purse, guilt tripped me into buying all of the groceries, went into my room without my permission on a frequent basis, etc.

The biggest one was when I started moving out, he actually stole about 10 prized Video Games from my room. And even a month after my husband and I moved out, he was still calling me for money - because he quit his nice paying job for Pizza Hut because we were covering most of the expenses of the household.

I had 2 doozies at different times. One stole from me and ran up my phone and power bills. She would get her kids on the week end and bring their weeks worth of laundry to do while they were there.

2nd one did the same, ran up a $125 her first month in there, had men in PRISON calling collect and was on the phone from the time I went to work until I got home. She had company often that were obese and broke up my furniture. She never paid all the rent she was suppose to or her part of the utlities. By the time I threw her out she was extreemly behind on what she owed and had quit telling me how she pays ALL her bills.

I am cured of room mates! NEVER again!

I have got one that trumps all of you!!! Ok we (me and my husband) let this one guy stay with us because he had no where else to go. My husband was sorta friends with him, they worked together for awhile.) Well I put a time limit on it that he had to be out within 2 months. He agreed well 2 months turned into 6. Finally he was forced out when we decided to move. Anyway he was a drunk!!! And a pill head big time. One night actually it was a couple days before christmas and me and my husband were decorating the tree and Dan came home wasted we thought he drank so much he would just go in his room and go to sleep like he usually did. Not the case. He first turned on his stereo blasting heavy metal music, then came out fell on our christmas tree and knocked it over. Then when I told him to just please stay in his room he stood on the balcony and started screaming jibberish at the top of his lungs. Finally he went in his room for awhile then came back out and proceeded to go on the balcony scream some more jibberish and then peed on the balcony. I could take no more I was ready to call the cops. Finally he calmed down he went in his room and we finally went to sleep. Well a month later I got the cable bill and he on the same night ordered $350 worth of porn!!!!! he ordered 2 movies at once then a movie every minute and so on.. When he finally moved out he had plates of food in his room from god knows how long, he ruined the carpet with stains that i don't even want to think about. He was truely the room mate from HELL!

A little better than two years out of high school and working full-time, I moved in with two friends. They started hanging around with a younger group - high school aged to around their age (they were both a yr younger than me) - and our apartment suddenly became party central. This wasn't my idea of fun so I'd usually leave when the party started, go hang out with some of my more sane friends. I turned 21 not long after and asked them to put a stop to the parties because I didn't want to find myself in trouble since I was the only one around who was of legal age. They refused. I just tried to deal with it as best I could and made damn sure I wasn't there during a party.

The place was a mess all the time - beer cans, pieces of food and junk all over the place. We each bought our own food and mine suddenly started disappearing; seems the partygoers liked to raid the fridge and cupboards. As calmly as I could, I talked to my friends, explained that they needed to keep the teeny-boppers out of my stuff and that since it was my fridge, I'd put a damn lock on it if they refused to keep an eye on things when people were there. I moved the non-refrigerated stuff into my bedroom.

When I got home that night, I walked into the kitchen and saw the fridge was gone, it was replaced with large coolers. One thing I DID notice was that everything was impeccably clean. Walk into my bedroom - sure enough, there was the fridge. They had moved it while I was at work. I could see the light on in one of their bedrooms; knocked on her door and she basically told me to take a flying leap. By this point I was livid. I opened the door and much to my dismay, I found her in bed with...her brother. Yeah. I think I almost threw up.

I went in my room, grabbed a change of clothes & my purse and got the heck out of there. The next day while they were both at work I went and moved all of my things out, talked to the landlord and told him I refused to live in a place that housed underaged parties and incest and that if he wanted to sue me - he could right ahead. He was understanding and allowed me to be released from the lease. I had to move in with my parents for a little while but it was well worth it. That girl was later thrown in jail for embezzeling from the company she worked for. Not sure what ever happened to the other one, and frankly - I don't care.

Many years later, I was asked by another friend and her fiance if I wanted to move into a condo with them and share expenses. I was hesitant, but we were older and certainly more wiser. That experience was an extremely pleasant one. I even stayed with them in their home for a few months last year while in the process of relocating.

Win some, lose some I suppose.

I'm bumping, I know but this is a fun thread.

My story was my junior year of college. I lived with my longtime friend and a mutual friend in a 3 bedroom apartment.

The mutual friend was a nice kid, but used steroids occasionally and drank frequently. However, he was always considerate of us and we never saw him use steriods and he always went out for his monday or tuesday night binges.

We actually enjoyed living together, and did a lot of hanging out together. He had some nice things that just weren't apartment friendly (a motorcycle, dirt bike and a liscensed hand gun) that he kept at my family's nearby vacation home. Life was good...

This all changed when he met a girl back home (about 2 hours away for him). The started dating and he ended up knocking her up. He dropped out of college, left our apartment and moved back home. we kept in touch and he promised to pay us rent and utilities. He payed the first months rent while he was gone and electric, then contact with him became less and less and we weren't getting any money from him.

He apparently didn't change his mailing address because we continued getting his mail and it accumulated in a pile on the counter. finally, 2 months later, we decided to open up some mail and see what it was about. turns out he owed THOUSANDS of dollars to credit card companies, cable companies, banks for overdraft fees (upwards of $600 in overdrafts alone!), etc.

Well things just got worse. We spoke with our landlord and he was understanding so he allowed us to "get the money to him when we could and try to track the other roomate down." We did what we could and ended up about $400 short in total by the end of the lease. When we moved out the apartment was spotless except for the ex roomates bedroom which had most of his belongings in there.

I told the landlord that I still talk to the ex roomate and I'll get the money and have him pick up his things. After weeks of phone calls, I finally got ahold of the old roomie. I told him I needed money to give the landlord and he needed to get his things. I also told him that I took the handgun to my house (upon my ex-roomates request) because my father had a gun safe and we didn't want it sitting in an unoccupied vacation home.

He said he'd meet me the next day and we'd exchange money and the gun and he'd go up and move the rest of his stuff out of the apartment. I called and called and called on the ride up and got no response. I finally left him a voicemail and told him that if i didn't hear from him in 15 minutes I'd leave his gun with his belongings in the apartment's spare room and take him to small claims for the $400.

I got a call back in about 5 minutes saying that he was going to call the police and report the gun stolen! We argued a bit but he was in such a rage that nothing was going to change his mind. I pulled off the highway and went to the nearest police station and told the first officer I saw and said, "I have a fire arm not registered to me that my ex roomate is threatening to report stolen and I don't want to have it anymore... I'll leave you my information, etc." Well, in any civilized area, the officers would take the weapon and likely take me in for some questioning... but I was in a rural area. The response I recieved was, "Nope, you have to hold onto that, we can't take a gun from you that's not registered to you." I was shocked. Most cities and towns will pay or give out sneakers or gift cards for hand guns turned in in weapons exchanges, but not this one; they essentially told me to drive off with a firearm that didn't belong to me in my trunk.

After more shouting matches on the phone, we agreed to meet in a VERY public place and exchange the gun for the money. I can't tell you how scared I was. I was about to hand an angry, steroid abusing man who was about to become a young baby-daddy a hand gun and bulletts (I didn't mention those? well they were there all along). I am not sure if I've done anything that stupid before, but I needed that $400.

We met, he handed me the cash, I handed him the gun (and ammo) and as he peeled out of the parking lot with his middle finger raised high, I took a big breath. It was the sketchiest, weirdest, most nerve-wracking experience I have ever been part of.

I drove up to my land lords' and handed him the money (without mention of the story). Turns out my old roomate never removed his stuff from the apt. and the landlord had to hire a moving service to move it (he was nearly 70, so it was understandable) all to storage. He showed me the collection of stuff and I picked through it and took some stuff I liked. I sold most of his clothes to goodwill and the landlord ended up giving me the full sercurity deposit, including my old roomate's portion. Furthermore, that landlord STILL gives me good recommendations whenever I'm applying to rent elsewhere.

It was a scary/crazy experience, but I ended up being better for it (both financially and in terms of character). That said, I'll never own a gun as long as I live and I'll never live with another steroid user.
