Every vet I've been to declaws cats.

Something I've come across recently is the AGE of the pets. Fewer and fewer places are renting to those with puppies, and lots have "puppy clauses". The lease we're signing tomorrow even has a clause that if we have/get a pet we haven't disclosed and gotten permission for ahead of time, we agree to a $100/day FEE for everyday that the pet is in the home.

Our cats are not declawed and that has been "hmmmd" by prospective landlords... deposits are a bit higher, but I'm not really worried... although my cats occasionally choose a small part of carpet to destroy, I always disclose this upfront and ask if the rental home has spare carpet and if I'd be allowed to attempt having it repaired, before being charged for an entire room of new carpet.

Honesty upfront is the key... eventually you're going to find a landlord that's a good fit, but it won't be as easy as renting a place without pets.

This was years ago (early 1990s), but in college a roommate of mine brought home a puppy and the apartment manager found out about it almost immediately. We were all slapped with a $700 fine (the puppy was in the unit for one week) but since we were poor students she agreed to waive it if my roommate put a deposit down on the puppy immediately, which he did. She took pity on us, but she did not have to!

I never had an "unauthorized" pet again.
