Although my husband and I have never gone into dumpsters, we have taken perfectly good furniture and items left out with trash. He has refinished "old" (really, antique) furniture thrown out. Actually renters have left tons of things that we take home or donate. Garage sales, even just putting something out on the curb with a "free" sign on it is better than adding to the landfills.

Back when I was a kid growing up on an air force base, my buddies and I used to go dumpster diving in the barracks and residential dumpsters all the time, especially when a pilot or airman was reassigned and moving out. Found all kinds of cool stuff doing that, including electronics, toys, beautifully assembled and painted model airplanes, video and audio cassette tapes and LP records (for anyone who remembers those ).

It also kept our treehouse well stocked with dirty magazines

My condo is decorated in "2nd Life Finds". Some things I've even given as gifts (like the perfect Keurig coffee maker). I'm 75 and not a hoarder, but can't let something that has a future be thrown in a dumpster bin to be crushed.

Well, my condo Board has decided I am posing a danger to myself (?!?) by getting things out of the bin even sent Family Services to my place to see if I was in my right mind!!! The investigator apologized over and over to me but that he had to check it out!!!! Now, I'm being further harassed by the Board (actually one member that just waits for me to do something wrong) because they got the Assn Atty. to send me a cease and desist letter!!! It's MY dumpster area (we have 5 in our Condo community) and I can't retrieve anything anymore????

So as an owner, I am told to quit "tresspassing" or there will be further action by them.

What do you all think???

They're not going to drop it, so if you keep diving, you're going to get into trouble.

I understand what you are saying and yes, it is a shame that perfectly good things are being thrown away and sent to our landfills. However, HOA bylaws and rules are HOA bylaws and rules and you are not going to change that fact so either you abide by them or face the consequences of being fined, and if all fines/dues are not paid then you can face the possibility of foreclosure and eviction.

I have pulled stuff from dumpsters and from the curb during clean up weeks and sold the items for good money online and auctions. lots of antiques and rear collectibles get put out. found toys that collectors want still mint in box. and art deco items.

I bought a heavy duty shredder and any piece of paper goes in there. Receipts, etc. I even shred junk mail. I'm not a huge computer geek but I have a name and address I can find a lot of stuff about someone. Lots of free info and what isn't free costs a few bucks and I have all I need about you

They really took their time and went through every little thing. They had these little flashlights... they knew what they were doing.

I spoke with the management this morning and told them what happened. They said they knew about the problem and were dealing with it. I couldn't seem to get any specifics as to how they were dealing with it.

Is this something you call the police about when you see happening?

And just FYI - shred, shred, shred anything you think might be personal or private. Don't put anything in your trash that you wouldn't want criminals to get their grubby hands on. These guys looked really rough, and this is not a rough part of town at all. Neighbor lady was so afraid she even asked me if I'd walked her back to her door. Those guys really creeped her out. They creeped me out, too. My husband and I take the trash out after dark all the time... but now having seen this I won't do it unless it's light out.
I have heard that there are many ways that these type people can steal info about you. Yes, I would call the police, and I would have videoed them to show the police.

Obviously this isn't someone looking for a thrown out piece of furniture....they want someone's personal info.
