All other things being equal, as far as the size of the property, would you rather rent an apartment in a nice area, or a detached house in a location that has some issues? Right now I'm fortunate enough to rent a house in a good area, but eventually I will be forced to move (I knew that from the outset). Generally speaking, my price range will either get me a 2-bedroom apartment in Los Gatos or Cupertino, or a 2-bedroom house in a questionable part of San Jose.
I have never lived in either an apartment in a very nice place or a house in a sketchy area before, so I'm not sure which one I would like.
I would much rather be in the nicer location. How could you enjoy living in a house in a sketchy area? You would be stuck in a house that might be great but couldn't enjoy anything around it.
I'm not from your area, but generally speaking, I'd take an apt. in a nice location. No place is perfect, but I like to be reasonably sure that I can sleep not worrying about someone breaking into my pad!
The nice area. We moved to Tulsa and had the choice of the nicer apartment area or the house in the "bad" area. I would rather feel safer than live in a place I am always worried someone will break in or my car will be broke into. Still could happen in the apartment but less likely.
If you are home during an armed home invasion, what good is insurance gonna do you?
Unless your insured with Smith and Wesson
Well, it'll take away my incentive to fight back and probably get myself killed if I know that no matter what they take, I'm only a small deductible from getting a cash payout for everything I lost..
Location doesn't guarentee against home invasion, but I'd say, less likely.
With bad neighborhoods come drugs, violence, and burglaries to support
habits, I'd choose the better location, even if it were a shoebox.
