I initially had a six month lease in Milwaukee, it has since expired and now I'm on month to month with two month notice period of moving out. I've accepted a job out of state that is a thousand plus miles from where I currently reside. What are my options at this point, I would like to give two month notice, but I am unable to due to start dates and don't want get stuck with paying two additional months rent in a place where I don't reside?

Be up front with the LL and give as much notice as you can. It's best to tell the LL what is happeneing and the Ll may be OK with a 30 day notice. The usual for month to month is a 30 day notice. check the web site for the county and state laws in your area to see what they say. You may get away with a 30 day notice if the state or county laws dictate it.

refer to your lease. There should be a clause regarding relocation. If you can't find it, talk to your landlord and let him/her know the situation and see what the two of you can work out.

On a month to month, with 60 days notice, give your notice to vacate now.
Make certain its in writing, certified and include a request for a move out inspection.
This will give you an idea of what you can expect to get back
from the SD, leave the unit in tip top shape.

The most your going to loose is one months rent if you leave in 30days,
you can pay the months rent in advance unless you negotiate otherwise with the LL.
The most important thing, you don't want to give him any reason to go to small
claims court and get a judgment when your over a thousand miles away.
