I'm in a co-op building and rent, and have been here for over 3 years. My landlord is very happy with me and I have over a year worth on my rent contract left (I get a very good rate and renewed for 2 years). Recently some new people moved in upstairs and I can hear EVERYTHING. And I mean everything: it's like they are stomping all day long and leave everything on the floor... I even hear their cell phone vibrate, not ring, Vibrate!

I work out of my studio, and can take the regular daily NYC noise, but this is frankly unacceptable, its nearly constant and non-stop.

Any advice? I tried ringing and then knocking on their door when they are Obviously in and they didn't respond!

And she's constantly dropping something (boxes, maybe?) on the floor.
We don't keep the same hours she does, and it's stressful to be woken up by clunk clunk clunk all the time.
She's such a small woman. How does she make so much noise?
Thanksgiving Day was she was full of unusual noises ALL DAY LONG.
My poor dog is freaked out by the noise, and my nerves are shot.
We're reluctant to say anything for fear of retribution. Can't wait to move to a house again!
I feel bad that you have to deal with that everyday! I am not saying people can't live but they could take into account that there are others around them (above, below, side) and try to be more considerate.

Reading these boards have also made me more aware of my own circumstance and how noise negatively affects others. I am going to be moving into a condo next month where I will be the neighbor on the top floor. I will be sure to be considerate of those living below and around me.

I would talk to the landlord and see if theres anything that can be done. It sounds like he is happy having you as a long term tenant and wouldn't want to lose you. But if you can hear their cellphone vibrating it sounds like it might have more to do with the construction of the building. But perhaps the landlord can give some suggestions or have some ideas.

Good Luck

The couple that used to be up there NEVER made noise... so I don't think that's it.

So what do you think it is? I seriously doubt what you're hearing is their cell phone on vibrate and if you can really hear their cell phone on vibrate, you must be living in a building made out of cardboard.

And I can't believe you complained to your landlord because you 'thought' you heard your neighbors phone....do you expect the landlord to take their phone away??

And do you expect the landlord to duct tape their mouths shut? Cut off their feet? Take the doors off their cabinets? What do you really expect your landlord to do??

You're going to hear noise...and if you can truly hear their cell phone vibrate (which I seriously doubt you can) you're going to hear people talk. You say you hear 'voices' so they aren't screaming at the top of their lungs or fighting to the death are they?

What you're hearing is daily living noise and that's nothing your landlord can/should do anything about. If it bothers you that badly then move to another unit, buy home out in the middle of nowhere because you're still going to hear noise in a neighborhood or suck it up and realize this is part of living in a cheap azz building.

If you aren't going to read what I wrote, please don't even bother responding to my posts. And putting ' ' over and over again is just supercilious.

Two 's put you over edge? Wow.....

I did read what you wrote, that's why I responded with what I did....so I'll ask again..."What do you expect your landlord to do about the vibrating cell phone you claim you hear?"

If you don't want comments or advice regarding your issues, don't post about your issues on the internet.

Most landlord's are willing to accommodate good tenants. Maybe make a trade? Offer to move without the normal repainting (or go in and do it yourself) Many would jump at that.
