im totally undecided as to where i want to live. But i need to get moving now before school starts. i want to apply to maybe 3-5 places. but im worried that this will affect my credit score. How should i handle this?
You can ask them to do a soft pull that will not count against your score. It's up to them how they want it coded. It will appear on your report even if it is a soft pull, but it will not be factored into the number.
It's been awhile... I was told that similar inquires within a 30 day period count as one.
I know that's the case for auto and home loans as it's meant to protect the credit scores of people who are rate shopping, but I don't know how it works with rentals.
I'll ask a different question, do you really need to apply to several different places? Is the market where you're renting so competitive that you have to get your name on a list at multiple places? It costs money to apply (usually $25 or more that I've seen) so you might want to start with just one application, after viewing several apartments and choosing your favorite. If you're denied or they choose someone else, they usually let you know pretty quickly and you can move on to your next choice and apply there. That's what I've always done and haven't had issues, but I know it can depend on the market and how much competition there is for available units.
Credit report for a rental, the hit has no true debt attached to it so (as I was told by the company we use) so the effect on your credit report is very very small. And yes, several hits in a week or 2 for the same purpose is coded as one.
