Midland, Tx. There's nothing there??? Tulsa would probably be good as would Columbus, In. Both are pretty low cost of living with recreational activities available low taxes and housing cost. Casper WY is good if you like being close to the Rockies, but the housing cost is a lot more.
It is tempting to move to some place cheap in retirement, but the reality is, if you ever want to see your family and old friends again, you will spend at least a few thousand if not more on travel to go back to see them. So while a place that has $700/yr property taxes makes me sit up and take notice, if I add in the travel to see family I'm right back to where I started with what I pay now for property taxes--very near family and old friends. Sometimes I think it's a no-win situation for those who move to save money.

How many times a year is your grown kid, esp if s/he has a family, going to come visit you, realistically? Unless wealthy, very few can afford a several-thousand mile trip (maybe with kids in tow) more than once a year. How many times are your best friends from "back home" going to visit, per year, really? The only realism is making new friends and talking with family via electronics. Which is fine, and what many who move would rather do. On the other hand, I have heard folks who moved far away saying that they see their kids now more often than when they lived several towns away. If you want to be happy and secure in your move, you have to know your own relatives and friends well enough to have the correct expectations.
When we lived in So FL, we had many visitors--family and friends. Since we moved to ATL, they don't visit nearly as often. Of course, we are older now and don't encourage it like we used to. Too much work!!!

I can't think of a place that I would dislike more than living in Las Vegas - it is the armpit of the US.
