I stumbled upon this thread in the Caregiving forum and thought, in light of the snowbird thread recently being closed, that some here might want to check out this thread in regard to making decisions about where to live as they age. This is the kind of realism I personally dealt with for many years with my mother and another elder. A lot of food for thought.

Thanks, negirl; my heart goes out to her and anyone in that situation.

My neighbor snuck up the back hill in his front end loader around 8PM last night and cleared the barn and road Dh heard the machine and it scared the heck out of me, then we saw the flashing light on the cab and figured out who it was. They are such nice people, we love them dearly.

How nice. We had a similar thing happen. dh had dug a pathway out sideways to the driveway but his little path that went straight out to the road had become covered with another foot of snow. Tonight he noticed that some kind neighbor had shoveled it out again. There are some really nice people in the world (to balance out that mean guys who cause all the trouble--we've got those here too.)

That's very cool; the karmic circle turns.......

-15F at 7AM...yikes. It's crept up to about -4F as of now. Waiting for some warmup before we hike into town, prob won't leave until noon.

Almost balances out our troublesome neighbor here who really shouldn't even be here. Older, divorced, crazy, drunk, mean, hollering, nosy--he lives in back of us and spies on us. He reports people to the police but the police ignore him. If dh shovels a little bit of our shared driveway he comes out and yells at dh.

He bangs on our windows or the door if one of our friends even turns around in our shared driveway. He finally put two lawn chairs on his side of the driveway to block anyone. He does not have a car so why does he care? Now, in the dead of winter, the two lawn chairs are still there and they are covered in three ft of snow.

His house is falling apart and is a danger but if dh offers to help, he hollers Supposedly he has family in Florida who were going to take him. Maybe they will.

Here's hoping that your winter gets milder and that spring makes an early appearance for you. I haven't been around here much because I've been working on figuring out ways to deal with the possibility of my pension being severely cut. The unofficial word is that the trustees think it might take as much as a year to figure out how much they need to cut so I'm spending 2015 being uber frugal and exploring various scenarios to cope with this.

On Monday my vet confirmed my fears that Calypso, my 10 year old chocolate lab, is very ill with cancer and that she has maybe a week or two before I have to make that awful decision. It's amazing how symptom free she's been until just a few weeks ago. She's been with me since she was 6 weeks old and I really expected to have her around for another 3 or 4 years. Despite all the senior dogs that I've adopted and lost since retiring it's still very hard. Calypso will be the tenth dog of my own that I've lost in under 9 years, as well as two foster dogs and one foster horse. Since Zack, my black lab is almost 14-1/2 I know that he's not likely to be with my for much longer, even though he seems to be in fine health at this time. It's hard to imagine being back to a one dog household, with just Boca, something I haven't been since 1991. Given the uncertainty of my financial future I can't adopt even one more dog until I know where I stand.

We have a little run of warm days with temps in the mid 40's to high 50's over the next 6 days. I will try to enjoy them to the fullest since we then return to normal winter weather for another couple of months yet.

Be thankful that it warms up. When I get a temperature of -15 for a low the high may be only -13 if it's the first day of cold. Subzero weather here seems to last about three days.

In five weeks I can assume there will be no more subzero weather for me this year. When will you be safe?

Our snow season begins next month and peaks in April. It's uncommon to receive snow here from late June until late September.

Zugor, I feel for you with Calypso, your beautiful dog. It's almost impossible to bear. When I had my last one put down I had to get another one immediately and thank goodness there was a rescue dog available. Maybe you should try for a smaller dog next time because they do live longer. Prayers for you and doggie. I do believe animals go to heaven--immediately.

Zugor: I second that post above mine. Losing an adored and faithful pet is absolutely awful. I truly know what you are feeling. And in addition, the loss of income is another unbelievable thing happening to you.
Prayers and good wishes for you and Calypso. So sorry.
