Sexual activity until death is nothing new. Nursing homes, for ex., have specific rules about privacy b/c residents often pair off and want to have sexual relationships. The problem comes in when they want to have sexual relationships with someone other than their spouses or when they are demented and "attack" another resident who is not interested in having sex.

Yes, these are the things administrators have to deal with that family members typically have no clue about - their elderly parents are still sexual beings (to varying degrees, of course).

There is real concern in the medical community about how casual senior adults are about using condoms, and as others have mentioned, this basically has to do with associating condoms with preventing pregnancy rather than in STDs. In addition, many widowed seniors assume that since they spent decades married and monogamous that other widow/ers were also monogamous. They forget that a faithful spouse can become infected by a straying spouse, remain unaware of the STD, and pass it on to a new partner, years later. Some STDs don't have many (if any) symptoms.

Until the 70s, the only education most folks received in regard to STDs was about syphillis and gonorrhea. Surveys in the past indicate that most folks now in their 70s and older have very little knowledge about most STDs, including their symptoms or transmission.

Gerontologists, physicians, healthcare workers and nursing home administrators have been noticing the upward trend with STDs for about 20 years. So altho this study may be new, the concern(and the behavior) is not new.

Yes, indeedy. Several years ago AARP Mag profiled a woman in her late 50's divorced after 30 years of marriage, starting dating her old HS bf and got AIDs right off the bat.

Thought the statistic on syphilis was interesting. A fair number of people in their 60's have it. Gonna repeat:

I had a friend years ago who insisted on STD tests for a man she was dating before moving the relationship forward. They did eventually marry. Kinda hard to do if you're in a nursing home, however.

What is interesting is the perception of sexual activity among "elderly", we don't picture Grandma and Grandpa having sex.

Well, I can tell you...nothing stops, for lots of folks.

The funny thing about Viagra, a full script for a month of pills is FOUR! That is it! TWELVE is supposed to last 90 DAYS!!!

So, you better make it count.

Well,maybe.
It could be that more older people are having sex with younger people.
And since young people have the highest rates of stds, that's how older people are getting it.

Maybe some seniors don't like to use protection is because they figure they are going to die in 10 years anyway,so they might as well enjoy themselves before they die.

In any event,I would guess that it would be safer to say that if a 30 year old had sex with a 65 year old that it would still be 50% safer than a 30 year old having sex with a 24 year old.

Maybe there is more intergeneration sex going on?
