Wow, thanks.
You can add my town- at 60, you get a discount on a dump sticker, from $100 to $35, for the privilege of carrying your own trash and recycling.

Haven't been asked to flash an AARP card in a decade, and not a current member.
Too bad most of the 'restaurants' in that list are junk/fast food...

Also, sometimes at some brand places, the 'discount' is off of rack rate/list, so if you are spending some dough, inquire on real 'best' price, in my experience.

And, just to add: the best deal in the US, for sightseers: the National Park Senior Pass. $10 and it doesn't expire until the holder does. Must be gotten in person, at any NPS location, allows for unlimited entrance(s), and with 3 other people in vehicle, (who don't have to be 62+). We used it all across the US this past summer, and it is a remarkable deal. Worked in several state and county parks, too.

Am I the only one who thinks that old-age and handicapped discounts are demeaning? Rather like minority scholarships.

I consider it more of a right-of-passage. Much like turning 16 and being given the privilege of getting a driver’s license or turning 21 and being able to drink. For me, getting a discount because of my age is splendid and something I look forward to.

Not just chains and franchises, but individually-owned stores are giving discount as well, but one has to ask. Our local DIY place gives 5% senior discount every day of the week, while all other specialty shops (paint store, building supply stores, etc.) give 10% to 15% discount every day to locals no matter the age.

It doesn't hurt to ask.

I was offended at age 50 when I got my first mailing from AARP. But then, a few years later, I used an AARP discount ($500) towards the purchase of a new Buick.

Now I take advantage weekly of the Sr. discount at my organic food store and save the equivalent of the cost of close to three week's groceries, every year. I eat really, really well. Very hard to keep my food/household supplies budget under $350/mo, so the savings counts.

I also make a point of accumulating and using coupons on items I am always replenishing like pasta sauce, OJ, coffee, jam, butter, juice, soup, and use them on double coupon days. Probably save another $400/year doing this, seriously.

Just those two alone - double coupon days and sr. discounts saves me about $625/year. Add in the 2% credit card cashback on groceries, gas, and 1% on other purchases, and I'm up to at least $950/year I wouldn't otherwise have if I didn't pay attention to the discounts.

Single person living on one income. It may be demeaning using discounts and coupons (I find Medicare demeaning, frankly, feel like I'm a charity case), but unless you have a generous retirement income and unlimited assets, it is extremely important to watch the small stuff, imo.

The old adage - watch the pennies and the dollars take care of themselves works for me these days. Never thought I'd be back to doing this, but I must.

It is important to respect money. If you are embarrassed asking for the discounts, keep track of what you save and make a charitable contribution. The above savings allowed me to easily increase my charitable giving this year, as well.

It's all good.
