We codgers have finally reached nirvana (retirement). We have had many life experiences.
What has helped you get to this point in life; what pearl of wisdom would you
say helped you most in life.
What has gotten me through is a sense of humor. I find humor when used appropriately
can lighten the mood and also give a lift to the rest of the day.
Didn't Forrest Gump say 'Life is a bowl of cherries, um A box of chocolates? Forgot sorry
I dispute the notion that with age comes wisdom. For some people that's true, but for many it's not. I know many old people who remain prejudiced, rigid, hostile, ignorant, and self-centered.
I also dispute the notion that retirement is nirvana, as much as I love mine. Retirement is a phase, that's all. Life's problems do not cease upon retirement. Stress does probably diminish, and free time increases. But nirvana? A bit of an exaggeration.
For us, the pearls have been eating a healthy, whole grain/legume/veggie diet and keeping very physically active. My husband is a true athlete, while I keep very active w/ a number of physical activities such as skate skiing & hiking.
High on nutrients & endorphins!
My challenge is between backpacking/hiking season and skiing season,or when the snow gets bad in winter, I get antsy.
But I have decided to substitute teach between seasons to spend some time back in my profession with kids.
With age you have time to make many mistakes, so if you learn a little from each and remember a little, you accumulate enough knowledge that can hone judgement that when applied is called wisdom.
With age comes wisdom....but much of the wisdom I get is realizing how little I know.
Also, to answer the OP's question--the biggest wisdom may be a simple understanding that one way or another we find ways to muddle through. Doesn't seem that deep if you read it in a fortune cookie, but suddenly becomes meaningful when trouble comes your way.
