Tressa - it is great to come across your posts. It is good to know that there is life after Alaska. So many people retire south from here - I don't know why I am having such a hard time making that leap. Sometimes, I think it is an easier leap with a partner than it is as a single. Lucky you though... your kids are still here ... mine is on the other side of the continent - which makes snowbirding a little more difficult.
Anyways .. it is good to get the update that retiring and moving worked well for you.
Shoot, we live on 2,400 a month with a kid in college and a kid in High School and we manage very well. We have the same amount of bills as we did when I was working, (medical bills really take a large chunk out of our money, but, we have to budget for everything and forego some vacations, but, we are living and when the kids leave...We still will probably be funneling money to them until they get on thier feet.
Ya just got to know where the bargains are, and how to stretch a buck...but, if I had that much, as you have, I would be living high off the hog!!
I just found out how being retired really helps. I had to move recently and was able to afford the move, paying the rent at the new place in advance, got caught up on my bills and got my computer fixed. It seems I have more money to work with now than when I was working.
i will be retiring early....later than i expected since the economic catastrophe! but anyway, it occurred to me to get any and all dental work and all medical checkups, fix ups! before i leave. i'm very healthy but i decided to have elective vascular surgery to repair weak valves that caused spider veins and tired legs. and i'm going to talk to my dentist about replacing teeth with old fillings with crowns to ensure that they last!
Yep, my COBRA is $1,475 for the two of us plus a $7,500 per person deductible.
That's outragous. What would happen if you were medically disabled and needed constant doctor/hospital care?
