what is this commodities program? (supplement, states, gift, milk)

My next door neighbor stopped by yesterday and asked me when I picked up the food from the commodities program. she said something about a surplus that government gave to all seniors. I know nothing about this. If it is like food stamps or a food bank I am not interested. But if it is a "congratulations" gift for getting old, I would be interested. And, does anyone know what is included in it?

Be careful what you ask for.


The USDA commodity program provides free food to institutions like hospitals, schools, and other organizations that serve the lower income individuals. I am not familiar with any distribution to individuals BUT I could be wrong.


I used to get that food by the truck loads in my days of working at a state hospital. To call the food mediocre would be a slight understatement.

My Grandmother & Aunt were in senior housing. About once a Quarter, Senior Services would have pallet load of:
Cheese 5-lb blocks
Butter 5x1lb blocks
Powered Milk
...
Bunch of things like that ..

But they were mostly distributed to schools, and other commercial type Kitchens. Who could us/make thing with that size packaging. After about a month I would find the stuff in my Grams/Aunts refrigerator, and (sneak) them out of there apt.
