It's great to SEA that things are moving along for you ! I guess with the PET limit and all, that the SKUNK would have put you over the limit !! I hope that everything worked out in the end with your dog and cats and that they have wonderful new homes !
Also, I just realized what with you taking less for your lovely home in the mountains, that it might have been pretty difficult to get a loan on a new home in a NEW state with only retirement monies . So for you to find a slice of heaven WRITE in your own backyard and have a longterm job to qualify for the loan, well all I can say is that SOMEONE must be watching over you sistah !!!
Happy packing and best wishes for a smooth move NEXT weekend !!! Next time that I am down in your neck of the woods, I will be expecting a Marianne's Peanut Butter Ice Cream Cone (your treat - lol) !!

I decided to stop by the mobile last night on my way home and someone was swimming in the pool and I peeked in the windows of "my" house to see it again. I have plans for it. I will be taking more before and after photos. What struck me was the sunshine! Oh, my gosh, compared to the woods, there was so much sunshine!! And it was warm!
I had to go into town during the afternoon, too, and noticed all the traffic -- then I realized it's summer and the tourists must be going to the beach -- they are paying for hotels and all to be here, and I will be living here. It is such a weird feeling when you realize where you live is a place where people pay to be. (And to know you are not wealthy, but still live here! That's the weirdest!)
So, I am off to the store, and then back to the house to begin packing up things like dishes and the sort. My storage facility shed is nearly full already. I have people lined up for next weekend. The new buyers are thrilled to have this place (and they should be -- they got a GREAT bargain on this!). I "lost" money selling, but I also got a pretty good deal where I'll be moving, so I guess it evens out. Regardless, I'll be able to pay for the mobile in retirement, whereas I could not pay for my large home in the woods in retirement. One must do what one has to do.
Being in town will be nice. There's so much to do, and Santa Cruz being a mix of wealth, students, old hippies, gays and straights, artists, musicians, intellectuals, surfers, entrepreneurs.....makes it a place where anyone can find their spot. And being such a tolerant and caring town, there is so much to do that is free and fun. It's always surprising to me that people think of Monterey as "the" place to be, when that's not true at all. Monterey is small, it's got lots of retired military (and active military, as it has the Defense Language Institute there and the old Fort Ord), and is only about 10,000 people. Santa Cruz, on the other hand, is a college town of about 50,000 and is typical as a college town: a wide variety of restaurants, music, entertainment, book stores, cafes, events, just a lot to do. Of course, having the ocean at your doorstep makes it all the more unique. I'm not sure why people don't really know about Santa Cruz but do know about Monterey, unless it's just the name. But it doesn't matter -- because we can keep the good stuff to ourselves! Haha
Got to go -- just checking in. By the way....they had to "relocate" (Have a Heart trap) a skunk living under my new house!! So, I can relate!
Last night, about 2 a.m., I woke up to a whole lot of commotion downstairs. Then I heard my dog whinning so I thought - EEK! AN INTRUDER and he/they hurt my dog!
So I grabbed the golf club I keep under my bed and went to :get 'em".
I turned on the light and at the bottom of the stairs were 2 dogs and a cat (all mine) all trying to get into the hall closet - the door was open about 1 foot. I knew there was too much junk in there for a human so I proceeded down (ah, relief!)
Naturally, as soon as they saw me they went into a bigger frenzy. I get downstairs and happen to look down into a bucket that was sitting there and what I see is a tiny little mouse looking right back up at me with a EEK look on it's face.
I grabbed a towel and put in the bucket to keep the mouse from climbing out, grabbed the handle, took it to the back door, went outside and gave a heave-ho to the bucket, towel and mouse and then ran inside.
This morning, they were all sleeping outside the closet door - waiting for mouse. That mouse was so freaked out, it must be in the next county by now.
So, that's my exciting news. Hope everyone is having a good summer.

Wisteria; I am soooooooooo happy for you. This is such an exciting time and you have so much to look forward to. As you know my move didn't take me far but it is a whole other world. I opened myself up to new possibilities and a new beginning and have already made friends, become involved in things important and fun for me. I feel alive!!!! And you get to live in a resort! How cool is that!?
Karcon - Looks like life is looking up - that's great. I wonder how many will remain where they are - perhaps, the pastures aren't always greener somewhere else. Maybe you saw that during your travels. I would consider staying here if the winters were shorter, but, I guess I still want to experience a new loc in the next chapter of my life. Perhaps we can all have a meet-up somewhere someday and get that face to face. Good luck!
I was weeding in the flower bed out front of our house. I have to actually sit among the little bushes and landscape rocks to do the middle of the area. I had on shorts and was sitting on a cushion pulling up weeds. I moved to get up and out from under the cushion slides a snake. I had been sitting on a snake!!! He was small--about 7-8" and rosy brown. Turns out from my research that he was a worm snake and harmless. However, they lay up to 12 eggs at a time, so his brothers and sisters have to be somewhere! I'm leaving lots of weeds out there THIS summer!
I was sitting on a 1" thick weeding cushion, which was directly on top of the snake. And he stuck his tongue (?) out just like in your graphic! Oooooh!

I'm g;ad you didn't harm it. Snakes are much maligned but they are our gardening friends. If they are not poisonous, they pose no harm to us (a giant boa excepted).
Speaking of snakes, a few weeks ago, my tractor had a flat tire and I couldn't get the wheel off. So I called a guy who had really whale on it for a half hour to budge it. In the midst of all the noise, he jumped as he passed my shed. There was a 4 foot long black snake there (harmless). So then the snake goes behind my tractor to a bed on the far side of the tractor. We both try to get it go away which disturbed the poor snake even more. Then it tries to go back towards the shed aiming for where he was working on the wheel. So we just let it be and it slithered thru the spokes of a cart wheel and back under the shed. I guess it lives there but I haven't seen it since. So, I guess I have a pet snake now along with the groundhog that lives under there.

That would be great! Seeing new places is still on my list of things I love to do. In September am taking the auto train from FL to DC and then drive the four hours to see my daughter! I love trains. Coming home is going to be a road trip. Down the Jersey coast, take the Cape May ferry to Lewes, DE, then down the DelMarVa peninsula to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel over to Norfolk/Virginia Beach. From there I'll drive down to the Outer Banks of NC. My parents are buried in Manteo (Nags Head area) and I haven't been back since my mom's funeral last year. Then I'll drive over to Raleigh, NC (lived there for many years) and up to Richmond, VA (grew up there). Then to Winchester, VA to see friends, then back to the auto train for the trip home. These are all pretty short hops; just a nice drive. To drive from the Outer Banks back home is 15 hours (takes me two days) so driving back to DC for the train makes sense. The only "out of the way" part is to Winchester but that is only an hour and a half from DC.
I'm all for checking out new places. You just never know what you'll find.
