I believe there is no love like the love of a dog for it's "owner". Those big brown eyes look deep in your soul with such love and devotion! Nothing like it!!
Pets are truly special. I've pet sat for friends, but hope at my next digs I can have one of my own. This weekend, I will be volunteering with the Humane Society, at what's called "Fluff and Puff Dog Wash and Car Wash" I'll just be escorting the owners and their pooches from station to station.
I hope we have great weather, Sat, so that we are able to raise lots and lots of monies for the dogs and cats at the shelter.

someone should take a camera and get some great shots of this event, pooches getting all clean and fluffed up with their owners

Okay, folks, so the place Nancy thereader and I are living -- Santa Cruz -- made a CNN Money list! Ha ha. I guess it's true, but it's funny to me who is NOT one of the rich! (Okay, I am single, but somehow I don't think it counts for this article. )
I'm telling you, if I can do it, anyone can! Where there's a will, there's a way!
I have been totally swamped at work, not getting enough sleep, but I still do follow the posts!
Just thought I'd post that link (I made a separate thread, too, on the General City forum). It's nice to see Santa Cruz on the national map -- unfortunately, I don't have the means to be part of that group, but, hey, I still live here!
My best to everyone. Someday I will find more time -- I will, I will, I will (if I say it a hundred times, will it come true?????).
And to our two newest members: Umbria and Latashia, "Welcome!"
I wonder who's next?????

My area is so upscale no one ever reports on it! But like you I am the church mouse here. The average cost of a home here is off the charts, which is why my PROPERTY TAXES are a prime concern. I have my artistic involvements though, and it's the "rich" that makes the arts possible (money-wise, that is).

I'm so happy to have found this thread. I actually thought I was the only woman in the world who would eventually be moving and retiring to a new state all alone (and I have no idea where that will be yet). I do not like where I live at all (in an unfriendly, clannish small, small town in southeast Louisiana). I have absolutely nothing to stay here for once I stop working. My husband is retired and is in seriously bad health. As another one of his hospitalizations loomed, I spent all of last weekend absolutely terrified and feeling hopeless about striking off on my own one day. That changed when I found this thread.
I no longer feel like the lone ranger, and I have enjoyed reading your comments. I've already learned so much, mainly that moving to a new place should be considered an adventure, a new beginning, rather than a dreaded experience to think about later. Thank you all for being here.
Welcome elle_1218! We have all (I believe) experienced the fear and anxiety of moving all alone. We are here for all the support you may need. I'm terribly sorry about your husband's poor health. Be strong & ask any question you may have.
I'm far from retirement - and not single - but if I were? I'd retire to wherever I could be near any of my sisters. Seriously.
I moved away from home over 30 years ago.... when I was awfully young. I've "reconnected" with my siblings - and find that we share so much. Certainly we give each other space - but no one knows you like a sibling. We share the same humor, the same family traits....

I think it would be a no-brainer.
Believe me I understand the feeling and if my sisters were alive, I would try to convince them to move with me to Florida, once they either retired, or just got fed up with NY/NJ areas. We had the best relationships; I adored and greatly respected my sisters, even if they got on my nerves beyond belief at times. They were some of the best people I've ever known. I've had many a time where I saw no point of existing without their presence. They were my rocks
