Another now-defunct store is Cohoes, our local store gone when 4 were closed in '06. Their Presidents Day sales (which lasted through the weekend) were unlike any other until Burlington took over the stores.
I actually worked at one of the great department stores. My first job out of high school was stock boy in the shoe department at Schuster's on Third Street in Milwaukee. My second day on the job, my mother came in with a shopping list, to get my employee discount.
Before Walmart, Kmart, and the malls, in SoCal there was Zody's, perhaps one of the original discounters that featured low prices and rather stark features. If there was an earlier so called discounter department store I cannot recall it.

Also Fedco / Fedmart, Gemco ... there must be others I am forgetting.
I remember all of those but Haggerty's. They were since replaced with miod-priced stores like Mervyn's for apparel - a chain that disappeared in the early 2000s. Service? Wazzat? The younger generations don't know what they're missing. Not only have the true department stores pretty much disappeared but along with them the independent, specialty stores where good goods and exceptional service were the standard and a gold one at that.
Sometimes advancing years can be a blessing. I hate to think of what a new generation will bring and am glad I won't likely be around to see it. The Walmartization of America is a travesty!
So true.
Hagerty's was elegant. They had a mezzanine level where lunch was served on tables set with crisp white linens and fresh flowers....the huge chandeliers hung in the center and you could look down on the beautiful glass displays and all the people on the first floor...so classy. People who worked there remembered your name and you are so right...the service was personal and meticulous.
One of the greatest joys I had traveling with my family as a kid to other cities was exploring big department stores. I would nearly pee my pants.
