In addition to all of these other very accurate comments, as a longtime former government auditor let me assure you that there will be a paper/electronic trail of where you actually live. Once that is found, you are sunk.

If you want to live in California but pretend to live in Texas for tax purposes, keep in mind that stuff like credit card charges, utility bills, ATM usage and merchant transactions will clearly show where the person resided at any given period.

Seems like an awful lot of very high risk for a small reward of skipping income taxes.

applegate17,
We have told you what you propose is illegal and it is, you said you are not one to break the law but that is clearly what you want to do. None of your ideas to get around it, make it any more legal. You seem to be determined to break the law so be prepared for the consequences, also when you plan to break the law it is probably not a good idea to say so on an active internet forum, or an inactive one for that matter.

^^^Exactly.

But some people just have to learn the hard way.

Ditto.

This OP must either be in la-la land or just posting to post. In other words, it is not a real question.

In this world of ours there is not a whole lot that is encouraging and uplifting. However, I am encouraged and uplifted by the near unanimity of posters in this thread who are demonstrating honesty and integrity by condemning tax cheating and dishonesty. Thanks to all of you who responded in that manner for helping, in small measure, to restore my faith in humanity.

Exclamation 5150

Wow reading this thread all I think of is the Dierks Bentley song...

"5150 Somebody call the Po Po!"

This is about the worst retirement plan I have ever heard of, and I have heard some creative ones.

State of California will hunt you down guaranteed.

Note her pension if from her husband and not her. She may not have the familiarity of much that we are assuming. She is asking question based on a suggestion by her son and let us hope she is just not aware of all we have shared but is now advised and understands.

So registering my vehicle, obtaining my DL and contributing to my son's rent in Texas would really be all it takes? I am not one for breaking the law, but saving thousands a year by passively living in Texas may be something I seriously consider pursuing.
No wonder law abiding working people are leaving California in droves. This is not rocket science no matter how you choose to look at it.

Off Topic. Whether or not CA should be such a high-tax state is not the subject.

How OP can illegally circumvent CA's tax code - IS.
