Thanks to the wonders of the Interwebz, we baby boomers can educate ourselves on hipsters...and bros, for that matter. What's a "bro", you ask? This PSA...errr...video will teach you more than you ever wanted to know.
It's like referring to everyone over 50 as a hippie. Not everyone was immersed in that culture.
My children and their friends are in their 20's and I would not label any of them a hipster. Some are independent thinkers and have started their own businesses but a lot of them are pretty preppy.
Not everyone was immersed in their culture, but their superficial fashions were totally ubiquitous. (Long hair, etc). That's the sense in which "all today's youths are hipsters".
"Do you think all twenty somethings are hipsters?"
Some are hipsters, some of them are fools, it's probably hit-or-miss, same as any generation. Painting a generation with a broad-based brush would be like saying all people over 60 are old farts.
My definition of hipster would have to include the concept of non-conformity in the world of social behavior, so no. Some of the most conformist people I know are young Americans of the 21st century. The appear to be pretty fear-driven and that makes unconventional behavior less likely. And then there are those people of all ages who THINK they are hipsters because they are covered with tattoos or smoke weed all day or rebel just for the sake of rebelling. No one's a hipster if they don't have any original ideas or don't live an unconventional life and at this point those things are all frightfully conventional.
Hipsters tend to be drawn to the realm of the arts or invention, rather than business, politics, or team activities. Here are some hipsters: Gertrude Stein, Vincent Van Gogh, the Cone Sisters, Georgia O'Keeffe, Miles Davis, Frank O'Hara, Jackson Pollack, Allen Ginsberg, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Bill T. Jones, George Carlin, Erykah Badu. And as much as it pains me to admit it, the annoying Yoko Ono was and remains a real hipster. It's absolutely the reason John Lennon was drawn to her. He was a big enough man to recognize she was hipper than he was. No one ever said all hipsters had to have GOOD ideas ... just that they be outside the norm and attractive to people who admire invention.
The hipsters I know are mostly in their 30s, even in few in their 40s. Then tend to be younger Gen X, not Millennials. The Millies (e.g. 20s up to about 31) are more of a retro preppie type from what I can tell.
Austin is also getting "hipster" associated with it more often than not these days.
The city is undergoing drastic changes as it gentrifies and becomes the more upscale, more progressive place to live.
And along with that comes the hipster crowd. Those that strive to be different in the same way
Where did they come from?
