Recently a poster listed "good shopping" as a criterion for a retirement location. Perhaps this is largely a female thing, but I (as a male) do not understand it at all, and I'm hoping someone (of either gender) will be able to explain it to me.

I have long been aware that many folks, mostly female ?, view shopping as a fun thing to do per se, and this is what I just cannot grasp. If I need an article of clothing, I go buy it. If the gas tank in the car is nearly empty, I fill it up. If I need something at the grocery store, I go buy that too. None of these things is remotely pleasureable--they are chores to get done and as such are necessary evils in life. If I had a magic wand to wave which would accomplish these chores for me, I would gladly wave it. So I suppose I have two different, if related, questions:

1. How can "good shopping" be defined? Lots of stores to choose from? Does this have to do mostly with clothing? Or is it the type of stores, i.e., high-end, pricey stores, that are required?

2. O.K., once it's defined, can someone describe how the activity of shopping is to be sought after? I think I could describe the pleasure of skiing, or boating, or motorcycling. So I am looking for a description of the alleged "pleasure" of shopping. Perhaps the gulf of incomprehensibility to too deep to bridge, but I can always hope, hence this thread.

1. How can "good shopping" be defined?
Variety, proximity, competitive prices, clean stores, convenient layout in a master planned shopping center with nice landscaping, outdoor seating for restaurants, ATM or other convenient services (banks, dry cleaners). Similar demographics, merchandise consistent with the community and clientele. Several stores located near each other so make convenient to buy several things on a weekend. A gas station or two in the shopping center. A supermarket in that shopping center. Maybe a Lowes or Home Depot in the shopping center. Plenty of easy parking. Attentive employees who are free to help and are knowledgeable. No trash in the parking lot. A couple of fast food places in the parking lot.

This was an easy one.

Variety and proximity are tops on our list. Two of the locations we are interested have very nice malls - 45 minutes away. No Kohls, Penneys, etc any closer.

For the first 5-10 years it would likely be okay, but as I approach 80 I don't want to drive that far to shop.

Always use to quality shopping and malls and it was high on the list have them at both places. Easy driving to. Each has Costco, Whole Foods and Trader Joes. Raleigh has better department stores etc.

You can get just about anything delivered nowadays and by the time you're 80 it will probably be even more common and even more affordable.

Almost zero interest. In our small retirement town we have a CVS, and a thrift store. It's surprising how often we just drive over to the TS for things--hubby needs an electrical cord, a screwdriver, a bracket--he needed something the other day and was all set to drive to Home Depot but I suggested the TS. Sure enough, they found him whatever it was he wanted!

We really don't need much. Said thrift store is not a junk store, it has beautiful antique furniture (which we don't need) and great quality kitchenware--if I break a pyrex pie plate I run over there and get another one.

A couple of times a week we'll go either one town to the north or one town to the south to get groceries---------oooops to be continued. The burgers on the grill are ready---------------------------------

It is now very important to us to have good shopping.

After trying life in the pocono mountains with limited choices in everything we realized how nice it is to be be able to buy anything without driving 30-40 miles,or waiting days for a delivery from the internet.

If little shopping then probably ultra low population density. Isolating. Less amenities too. Boonies.

Not for me.

We buy a lot from Amazon but still need stores. Wife from JJill online but still likes the occasional mall trip to one including next week.
