I have two examples of people whose performance at an older age were/are inspiring. I know there are many more.
1. Placido Domingo, an opera star who is 73 right now and going strong. About a month ago I heard him sing the lead male role in the Massenet opera "Thais" here in Los Angeles. His voice is still strong and powerful. What an inspiration.
2. Henry Stimson was the United States Secretary of War (approximately what we would now call Secretary of Defense) from 1940 to 1945. He resigned from that post at the age of 78 about a month after the Japanese surrender. Nor was he some doddering old fool at the time of his resignation; rather, he had an excellent grasp of the very complex issues this country faced and stayed on top of them. Those issues included dealing with the Soviets and the use of the atomic bomb against Japan. A Republican in the Democratic administration of Franklin Roosevelt, Stimson embodied the notion of selfless service to his nation. Also an inspiration.
3. Konrad Adenauer became the Bundeskanzler (Federal Chancellor) of West Germany in 1949 at the age of 73, a post he held until 1963 at the age of 87. His leadership took West Germany from the ruins of World War II to prosperity and good relations with some former enemies, notably Great Britain, France, and the United States.
4. Jack LaLanne was an exercise and fitness guru who doesn't need any introduction from me. He continued performing amazing physical feats well into advanced age, finally dying in 2011 at the age of 96 after being ill a few days.
Arthur Fiedler, the late conductor of the Boston Pops. He conducted for 50 years! His death occurred shortly after conducting his 50th anniversary concert. Looks like if you've got a passion for life, it helps.
Pablo Picasso, artist who led an exciting life and greatly influenced the world of art. He was a bohemian who did what he wanted, defying the conventions of society. Had a long productive life and was still going strong.
What about Rosemary Depler? 101 years old and throws out the first pitch for a Cardinals game. Granted she is not famous, but hey for 101 year old to that on her own is pretty impressive.
