I started planning in 1976. I was going to retire at 50. I didn't actually make it till 53 but all in all, pretty close to my original projection. I am one of those whose plans took a different path after the death of my H. I survived and I have a good life.
If I could go back and do things differently, I(of course) wish I would have known H was going to die at 61. It would have changed a lot of things. I also wish I would have put more in my 401K!
