We chose a slightly smaller home, with much less property, with about a 1/3 reduction in costs (mortgage/utilities) and a golf course view, a block from the lake. This required a cross-country move. Plenty to do here, and a 4 season climate. We may downsize again when we get too old for the stairs, I guess that would be in about 12 years or so. If we find ourselves traveling a lot, we might try a townhome, probably in our same community.
We are planning on a decent sized house... 3,000 sq feet, enough room for each to have lots of personal space, and our game room. More than enough room for 2 people and occasional house guests. Something newish - 10-15 years old at the most, located in Florida, near a big city, near an international airport, near a beach or beaches. Possibly central Florida or Northern Florida. I LOVED Tampa area - nice homes - but the taxes are outrageous for a 3000 sq ft house and the homeowners insurance also out of this universe.
We have friends in Central Fla., and that is kind of a draw. Would be nice to know a few people in the area when we get there. We have moved around quite a bit (lived overseas, in different places in the US and traveled all over as well) and find it not too hard to make friends... however, you can't subsitute lifelong friendships.
Depends on your retirement cash flow......
If you can afford it then get what you want. You cannot take it (money) with you when you pass. Enjoy it now why you can.
Life is too damn short anyway.
enjoy

This is not Florida and there are no nearby beaches, though a new 3,000 sq ft house in lush forest with river frontage is very doable with really low taxes, low insurance and low COL.
I certainly understand the transient career lifestyle, and the desire to settle down.
I'll take 1/2 the house in a great location. Less maintenance too!
