I will be a nyc corrections employee retiring looking to move to the fort mill tega cay area, any info on how life is there, I see not many doctors accept ghi there but any info would be greatly appreciated
I live in the Fort Mill area, but don't know about your insurance. I do know that most of the medical offices have websites and should list the insurances they accept.
What I can suggest is that you ask your question on the South Carolina, Lancaster/York County board and you might find more people who would be able to help you.
Hello to all NYC retirees that has GHI as there medical insurance. I too moved to Charlotte, NC 2 years ago and learned from GHI that the correct term to use is "do you (dr) participate in the GHI program" participate is the major word.. if you ask the drs office if they accept GHI they will say yes, all drs accept but look for a bill in the mail because they will be out of network. I was in the ER on 2 separate occasion blue cross blue shield paid the ER visit but because I had x-rays done and they were read by the dr that bill went to GHI and GHI didn't pay so I called GHI and was told I could fill out a form called "surprise bill" $700 it took a year for them to pay it but it was done..Always remember the word "participate" when dealing with GHI.
Hope this was helpful.
I'm retired NYPD. My understanding of GHI is that out of the NYC area and parts of Florida, coverage is poor to virtually nil. Reimbursement for doctor bills is only a nominal amount when GHI is used out of area.
To clarify my situation, I retired from another location and use the retiree insurance from there for my wife and me.
