When I said I learn first on Facebook, I'm referring to deaths of more distant friends - old schoolmates, especially - and their families. Also former co-workers. IOW, the types information that people usually scan obits to look for.
Of course -- I know and wasn't really trying to respond directly on your post except it brought the situation to mind since the incidents happened pretty recently.

No obituary! I'll be cremated, as will my wife. When the last of us goes our ashes will be mingled and thrown to the winds here in the Ozarks. That's all. Once I'm gone, just as they did in life, people can think what they will of me.

Here's an example of how an obituary should read. This is NOT a joke or parody, it's an actual obit from our local paper.

Wow, that's awesome... and I learned a new word: mediocracy.

I plan to write my own obit.

The truth will be out there!

once you're gone, you really don't have that choice - decision will be made by "survivors".

knew a woman who hated thought of cremation; had burial plot, money set aside for "final expenses" (she should have purchased a burial plan) --- family had her cremated, sold plot

I've seen some that were written by the deceased...pretty much so, anyway. They're different. And yeah, I've read some obits on people I actually knew and I felt like, SERIOUSLY? Someone really wrote a fictional obituary? The sinner suddenly became a saint, the chaotic, troubled person suddenly becomes normal, previous marriages and sometimes, children from them disappear. Wow. Kind of reminds me of my ex, who liked to talk about himself. Even while still married to me, he ran around telling people at bars the story of his life, omitting a lot of details, including his wife and child. Oh well! I moved on, thankfully! I've always wondered why the cause of death is seldom mentioned. I'd like to know what kills those people, especially the young ones. Death is big business and many entities want their cut. Hospitals, doctors, funeral homes, cemeteries, those who make markers and monuments, newspapers, etc. Pretty much all is very expensive. My daughter was going to pay for my sister's obituary. When she found out what it would cost to put one in two city newspapers, she probably nearly passed out. Many names of deceased people will never appear in those newpaper obits because of the high cost, that's all I can say. Funeral home website obits and small town weekly obits are more affordable.

That's cruel but at the same time, so funny!

Yes to the bolded.
If Curmudgeon has a prepaid cremation plan in effect, as DH and I do, the survivors would have to arrange for and pay the additional expenses themselves for casket, embalming, grave, burial, etc., if they go that route.
So you're right, survivors could make another decision but it seems a silly one.
