a medical disaster can ruin many a good plan for early retirement. Had a friend who was a Delta employee and working his whole life for early retirement. He was a great outdoors man who loved to hunt and fish and travel the world-on Delta's dime. then his 19 year old son was diagnosed with schizophrenia and that put an end to his dream. He needed to work for the health insurance and medical benefits and to afford treatment. It happens.
I am 63.5 but can see a big physical difference in my body orthopedically from 55 to this age. Hit around age 62ish I think. Hope that I see improvement with physical therapy and such. Not wanting surgery to repair shoulder and knees, but it is on the table.
I am blown away at the rate of changes for me personally. I'm 68 and when I remember back to 55 I was a different person. Physically I have changed in those years more than any other time except maybe from birth to age 10! I know many others feel they have changed politically, spiritually and become people they never thought they would become. People seem to tolerate injustices less and don't hold back offering opinions.
What do you see as the major changes in your life from age 55 to 65?
I agree which is why I started to go to a fitness workout three days a week. I found much of it is if left to age; we start doing less and less as far as exercise goes. I have been at it near four months and regained some of the loss. Otherwise I have remained much the same person. As I type this I am waiting on wife to get ready to go then we will have lunch someplace. Waiting hasn't change a bit over the years;ha ha.
Still in reasonably good shape at 67, but, noticed changes over the last 3-years: Weight and hair redistribution; Less strength and stamina; Also, the things I couldn't wait to retire and spend everyday doing ... aren't really the things I'm doing.
For me there was a noticeable decline in physical strength between 65 and 70. I still exercise, but doing yard work and the like is much harder. Also have arthritis in my hands which affects grip strength and ability to carry things.
At 67, I haven't noticed much yet. I still love to be outdoors...if I could guarantee that I'd be allowed to die outdoors, I'd be happy! Give me the fresh air and sunshine, the views of forests, mountains, and lakes. I drink it all in, and it seems to give me greater stamina.
I think genetics has a lot to do with this (duh...). Lifestyle? Maybe to some extent. Some folks just can't seem to overcome the 'sins' of their youth (smoking-drinking-drugs), while others continue those 'sins' and live to be 100. All the rules were meant to be broken; it's just not the same for all people.
I'm a marathoner and regular exerciser all my life. And it's not that I love it for its own sake. I was taught at an early age that your daily workout is like putting money in the bank. Now in my mid 60s, the philosophy hasn't changed. The payoff: normal range weight, no health problems, and lots of energy all the time. (I notice that this thread ties in closely with the earlier thread about "if I knew then what I knew now.")
Strangely, my body has fared well, my figure is as good as 10 years ago, but my face has...rather changed. Not creases or wrinkles, but just kind of a...well, "older look." I could possibly pass for 5 years younger, but that's because of my hair. I do notice changes in others, and think "how old!" but if truthful, it's the same for me (i.e., I'm sure others think the same thing about me). The old man keeps saying I look the same as in college, but that's just him being weird.
At 55 I was mentally and physically more in line with "late 40s." At 66 I'm more in line with age "70."
I just turned 55. I read that list with amusement, as it could have easily applied "from 45 to 55" to me!
