I tend to schedule things. For small tasks that require some effort I tend to designate a future time, and I try to adhere to that schedule. For major things, like trips, I tend to do the same. Both DH and I plan those things as much as possible, although I don't try to schedule every minute, and we can always change plans.
I think I operate that way to obtain a feeling of control over my obligations.
I've become more spontaneous as I age. I booked a cheap flight to Florida last week because it was cheap and available. I've had only a few rough ideas while here and just played the hotels, meals, and even destinations as I go along.
Definitely Do It Later. Much much later. After I contemplate every aspect of what it entails, what equipment I need to do it, what I need to dress in to do it, what part of my day I can do it in, and how I will feel if I do it. Never, ever think about how I will feel if I don't do it. Spontaneous is not in my vocab.
As we age we begin to lose people we once knew and see medical changes for ourselves that may impact our ability to do things in the future. Things that once seemed easy or convenient may no longer be.
Even though I'm only 28, I've seen plenty of family members and even friends around my age say they were going to X or Y in the future, then that never comes to pass due to their own deaths, declines in their health, or life changes like having a baby or having to relocate. Nothing is guaranteed and all we have is the here and now.
If we do things sooner rather than later, we have a greater certainty of getting it done. If we defer doing something, we may be better financially prepared for it in the future, but that future may never come. Which option do you choose? Do you try to find a happy medium between doing as much as possible immediately and deferring everything until the future?
I don't understand why a 28-year-old is posting on a retirement forum and asking questions like this?! It's weird.
