The villages is centered in FL because it is the size of a small state. At least now it is. I am not sure why Morse started the original trailer/pre-fab home complex there................ I think his father was a land speculator.

If you haven't read Leisureville". While it definitely has its biases about The Villages, it does give a decent historical background on 55+ communities and especially on Morris's development of The Villages.
For us: We currently live in the DC area and want to be in the middle of no where, but close enough to enjoy things. We are having a house built in Legacy of Leesburg in Lake county. Which is a little northwest of Orlando. We can get to Orlando in about 45 mins and WDW in about 40. We are young retirees 57 and 50. We thought about Ocala, but it was a bit far for us. We want to be close, but not to close to Disney and felt we could get that in lake county. I wish you lots of fun researching and visiting communities.
Maybe it's me but this entire thread is Florida places.... there is a thread on that already - I checked into this thread to read things about 55+ - social life, environments, etc. - NOT just Florida.
I lived in so. FL for about 10 months & left, I found the heat & humidity really oppressive & realized that I liked a city that had some cultural opportunities besides dinner theaters & going to malls. Some people really take to it though, I would rent for a while to get a read on the place if you go.
