Working-barely any. I lived in the same town where I worked. Drove to the grocery store, drove to visit people.
Retirement--We just returned from a 3000 mile drive to Florida and back. We drive twenty miles round trip to get to a grocery store and that's where the other stores are too. Summers we camp in Maine or Vermont--300 miles each trip?
My husband has semi-retired in the last 5 years or so. I plan to retire in the near future. I'd expect us to put on a lot of mileage in the go-go phase of our retirement and taper off during our slow-go phase. We will do everything that we can to make the no-go phase very short ;-)
With the anticipation of doing a lot of outdoor activities when I retire, we are looking for retirement place where we will log many miles of hiking, biking, rowing, swimming, driving and flying per year. In another thread on retirement location where one should take both weather and nearby service locations into consideration, I am more in agreement with the 'minority' position of choosing the place most suited for the current and near-term living condition. We may need to move into a small apartment in a big city with public transportation sometimes in the future. We hope that this slow-go phase will not take place at least 15-20 years from now;-)
