I don't think you have the slightest idea how things work.

The "doctors" don't "make a killing" prescribing medications or tests. And they never DID. Where did you get THAT idea?

As a matter of fact, the more socialized medicine becomes and the more people get free stuff, the less the doctor is ALLOWED TO DO on Medicare that the PEOPLE INSIST ON USING and will often take a LOSS even on office visits - if they keep giving the same service they used to give. I know doctors that won't even return phone calls anymore and say "wait until your next visit" to older people who they're treating when their Assisted Living caregivers or family have an issue (like an adverse reaction to a medication - serious stuff). I just heard of a doctor tell a family that DEHYDRATION is "normal" for her senior dementia parent.

I know doctors that stopped GOING to senior facilities after Obamacare. Some can't even afford to TAKE Medicare.

Even some quasi-wealthy people that I know will only go to a MEDICARE doctor so the TAXPAYER pays for it.

The MOMENT Obamacare got passed, the government cut the number of recommended mammograms in ALL age groups, for example. NOW they're even telling people age 65 or older they don't even NEED screening for ovarian cancer. But while they're telling you you don't NEED ovarian cancer screening in the same office visit they're asking you if you have any fire arms in YOUR house.

People allocating your medical care are quite happy to have you die ASAP, don't worry. And by People, I mean the politicians that you voted for to be responsible for YOUR LIFE.

I'm sure deep-seated unfocused bitterness and resentment will make our Golden Years even better.

Well, we have to have some hobbies and entertainment, you know ! As we age, we find great pleasure in complaining about anything and everything........it comes with the territory.

Yeah. I was just thinking the same thing, lolololol.

Being realistic about our own abilities and limitations, and having realistic expectations about others, while at the same time cherishing what time we do have left on this planet (and retaining that sense of wonder that soooo many folks seem to lose along the way) is the way to live a full life. In fact, that is true for every stage of life, not just the last several decades of our lives.

Being wistful or having cherished memories is one thing. Getting hung up and angry about "things not turning out as we expected" is over in another ball field -- the one you don't want to play on -- and where no one but other miserable, angry folks will be playing.

Life is too short--no matter how many years we have!--for regrets, anger, bitterness and an unforgiving spirit. Those ARE the things that will kill the spirit, and take a toll on the body.

I can tell you, if we were in our old home (where we raised the kiddos) I would be in the house all day feeling lost, but here, there is not enough hours in the day to do everything on my list. I HONESTLY believe that a LOT of issues with aging are connected to feeling socially connected, especially when retired. Hubby still working, but I have lunch with the girls, water aerobics class, daily walks, matinee movies with the girls, all kinds of things that keep me moving and content.
Those people who say "Geography doesn't bring happiness," really don't get it. I'm an architectural historian, and I can tell you, some of us are intimately tied to "a sense of place," and it can make the difference between feeling old and tired and worn out, and feeling refreshed and young.

I loved your post. Just loved it. Hubby and I are considering an "55+ Community" (age restricted) and your post was very inspiring and helpful.

If I am to use health issues as the catalyst for my "Golden Years", then yes, I may question why they are considered 'Golden'. However, I know people 20-30 years younger than I with serious health issues.

For me, retirement is 'Golden' because I never wanted to go to work, but knowing I had to, I made the best of it.

I suppose it's up to each of us to define what "Golden Years" means.

Anger has nothing to do with anything.

It's just reality over wishful thinking.

Ahh, I'm late to the table on this thread but I just have to chime in here and state the obvious, life is and always was a gamble, but unlike the one arm bandit type it's more along the lines of a card game wherein the players get to use their heads and a bit of strategy to ameliorate the innate risk. For me retirement has been a good thing, as for the aging part who beats that, ever?

Aches and pains, liver spots, hearing aids, arthritis, poor eyesight, and a ton of other things are our new companions now, and like that sometimes annoying friend, you eventually get used to their presence and accept them. I have some health issues, minor I suppose in comparison to most but they are there, and they aren't going away. I live every day happy as hell for the time I've spent out of the work world, from my wakening to the nightly late newscast I watch in bed, I'm doing things, going places, talking to people, having a good time in spite of all the discomfort the world throws our way.

Amen.

I recently read, "Brightsided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America."

WONDERFUL book.

Frankly, one of the joys of spending time with fellow retirees is that they've lived long enough to figure out what's real, what's valuable, what's foolish, and what's pure BS.

When I'm around someone who's relentlessly positive and bubbly, I find myself getting annoyed.
