Almost everyone posting on this thread seems to be offering financial and investment advice. I suspect you are correct. Regardless of the investments or the performance of the investments this man is likely to agonize over the issues. Maybe he could turn lose and trust an investment professional but that is highly unlikely. If the situation becomes bad enough counseling might be needed but that would be for mental health reasons instead of investments.

Unfortunately financial worries and insecurities can become crippling. People with these disorders are sucked in by the sky is falling, doomsday predictions. In the worst cases they fall prey to paranoia and conspiracy theories. These are spectrum disorders. We have plenty of people on this forum who are heading down the same road. Getting older just befuddles our thinking and leads to even more irrational fears and behavior.

having no money can be less stressful than having money . just different worries.

the human brain hates losing money more than it likes making it. people commit suicide over losing money. i don't hear to much about poor folks comitting suicide because they are on welfare or poor . .

People rarely if ever commit suicide over losing money. A major set back can serve as a trigger for some people who already suffer from depression and other forms of mental illness. Being fixated on the possibility of financial or other losses is another sign of mental illness.

Many people are highly motivated by opportunities to improve their lives including improving their finances and careers. We may be hardwired to avoid pain but most people will take some risks in the pursuit of happiness.

I do agree that lots of people can find happiness without achieving financial success. Our society and modern lifestyles do not make that easy.
