Just wondering. Lots of seniors talk about the increasing cost of medical/dental care with increasing age. Finally for the first time on my 2014 taxes, I had enough medical/dental care to get an itemized deduction out of it (age 70). It was spending $6,200 on hearing aids that put me over the top.

Since we are retired but not old enough for Medicare, we have an ACA-compliant silver policy we pay full freight on, currently running about $900 a month. Last year I had 2 major eye surgeries and my portion of the bill was about $8,000 for the two.

Not a goal of mine. I am thankful to NOT have enough expenses to claim. But I get your poll.

I retired at 60 and had to buy my own health insurance until I qualified for Medicare in 2013. It was insanely expensive, starting in the $600s and rising to $1300 a month by the time I hit 65. And this was for one person! So yes, DH and I qualified for medical deductions during those years. The following year's taxes came as a shock because we'd gotten used to big refunds, and suddenly we had to pay.

I also buy my own private medical and dental insurance so it's pretty easy for us to go over the minimum for the last 2 years.

Every year. It's no secret I have many specialists and spend too much time in their offices.

It wasn't a goal of mine either, I can assure you. One is always better off financially NOT having enough expenses to make the cut.

I was shown I needed some teeth capped/crowns @3 years ago. I replaced them over the three years. I also did have major surgery a couple years ago in a different state. Going there for checkups required me to stay the night and I did this for over a year (spanned two). So, yes, itemization had to be done.

Yep, like some others who've replied, we're not yet eligible for Medicare and pay $12K annually for health insurance premiums. In 2014, DH also had gum surgery to the tune of $8500. So far in 2015, we've already reached our out-of-pocket maximum. Oy!
