Certainly there are breakdowns on where funding comes from. In federal stats I have read 60% do not pay for the services they receive. I do not mind paying taxes for the common things. Its the problem that too many are becoming dependent on too few that is getting to be a problems. Not just here look at Greece.

Although Petunia 100 was not responding to me, but to someone else, I couldn't help but think of the pot and the kettle. And what sort of remarks are those? Haven't we had enough nastiness in this thread? How about admitting differences of opinion without being insulting?

You are correct, she was not responding to you. IMO, Petunia's response was appropriate and well deserved. If you are uncomfortable with the word "snotty" perhaps you should consider skipping this thread or placing Petunia on your "ignore list".

Yes, but how many of those are people who funded things that the current taxpayers are enjoying? Dams, aquaducts, freeways, bridges, on and on. Working people pay into the system that future generations benefit from. So, how do we sort that all out? Do we deny the wives who stayed at home cooking and cleaning and watching the children, who didn't pay taxes themselves? Did they not contribute to the husband's ability to work and pay taxes?

How do you quantify the 60% who do not pay for the services they receive? How much did they put into the system before they needed it?

Negating what the seniors contributed to their community and country, who are now relying on that same system is just ..... at best, myopic.

Well, no, I will not consider skipping this thread, since I have as much right to my opinion as anyone else. Your suggestion constitutes more nastiness, albeit disguised. Think about it; if disagreement leads to the suggestion that the other party doesn't belong as a participant in the thread, that is a sick situation.

I think they forget that those who came before them, paid for many of the things that made their lives what they were. If they went to public school, for instance, today's seniors paid for their schooling, as well as the roads they drove on, and the police who protected them, and the healthy water they drank out of the tap, on and on. And don't forget, all of us are still paying taxes - sales tax and gas tax, on and on.

So, for the nice American life you had growing up, with all of the above, you're welcome.

Well, maybe only the ones who aren't ungrateful.
People??

There have been over 200 posts on this thread to this point in time, and unless I missed something, there has only been one narrow-minded, self-righteous person who posted "you're welcome" type comments. Ironically, there have been many more individuals who have posted negative comments about people of means. According to several people in this thread, retirees with money are braggarts, are dismissive of those with less means than themselves, have been lucky, healthy, married well, inherited their money, or a combination of any and all of the above.

I find it interesting that in a thread that discusses how people with few financial resources are subject to insults, mocking and ridicule if and when they post about their particular circumstances, these same posters are basically guilty of the same behavior that they're complaining about.

Odd that you would take my post personally. I was addressing the people-at-large-in-the-world-who-say-you're-welcome-to-people-who-need-government-assistance.

Nothing deeper or personal or more evil than that. But, if you are one of the above who say "you're welcome" to people like me, then, yes, my post addresses you, too.

It sounds like you're best to stay where you are until you get your SS disability. Did the Section 8 application info say how long you can expect to be on the list before you are approved? You will get a higher placement on the list once you are determined to be disabled, and if you live locally, that is another priority point.

If the list is too long, you might want to investigate other places where the wait time is shorter. But, even after you get your disability, you can apply for any 55+ subsidized apartment's waiting list anywhere. The rent depends on where you live. For example, I moved to Redding, CA from the SF Bay Area, because the cheapest place in my old town was around $700/month. In Redding, it was $350. I moved to Redding because it was cheaper, and the Section 8 list was open.

Redding was too hot, so I moved to Crescent City, CA where the rent for a smaller apartment was $335, and the Section 8 list was open here, too. I just got my Section 8 voucher, and now my rent is $197. My SSI income is $889, which includes a subsidy for food, instead of food stamp money.

You can sit around feeling sorry for yourself, or you can use the internet to check out your other options. And know that your current situation is temporary.

Start with contacting the NOSSCR via the link above and getting an attorney. You should have a lot of back pay in a year or so. See about depression counseling (I got some when I was waiting for my SSI and it helped a lot to get me to start looking ahead and checking out my options), and I also know the weather in WA was really depressing for me. Consider moving somewhere else, after you get your disability, unless you're in love with WA or have other reasons to stay there.

Attitude is everything. I've been in your shoes. And I also thought all was lost because I couldn't afford to live in the SF Bay Area close to my daughter and other friends. If you can get over having to go a different route, you might even end up happy. I wish you the best.
Thanks!

I have a lawyer and I do plan on staying here until either the disability goes through or I retire, whichever comes first.

I decided not to apply for any low income apartments right now because of the utilities. Some of them pay your utilities, some don't. If for some reason I end up moving to an apartment and then get denied for disability (and they're denying people right and left) and got cut off from state disability because of that, I wouldn't have to worry about rent or food. But I would have to worry about utilities if those weren't paid. So that means I'd have to look to rent an apartment that pays utilities and that limits my options of where to live.

I am definitely not in love with Washington at all and I think I would move. In fact, with the payback I would get if I were approved for disability, I was thinking of getting a van or truck or small camper and just travel around in it until I could figure out where I liked it the best. I'd give anything to go back to the Bay Area, but I don't think that's possible. I'd like someplace rural, but close enough to a large metropolitan area where I have choices for grocery shopping and things like that. For example, with only TWO grocery stores, the Twin Cities area does not meet my criteria. I know being able to take advantage of the different sales grocery stores have is going to be important so that I am able to afford groceries.

All this mud slinging is not constructive no matter what camp your from. Concerning the "Your Welcome" poster. When I am in doubt of a response or trying to read a posters intended message, I sometimes take a perusal back through other posts by the poster. You learn a lot about the mind set of posters this way.

On a different note however. I don't know why this thread has turned into a debate between the "comfortably retired" vs. the disabled having to manage on disability. There is a vast middle ground between these two as well which probably apply to more people.

What about the people living on two social security checks with incomes of $2-$2,800 or a single mom with social security of $1,200 and a small portfolio who are making it. Those stories would fit the bill for what many retirees might be facing. It would be comforting and encouraging for those reaching the end of their working career to hear there stories as well.

I think if we can all be honest with each other, and recognize that there are a fair amount of individuals who have a certain amount of disdain or perhaps just concern for the number of people receiving any kind of government assistance and consider such assistance as taking from them. Whether that kind of "thinkin is stinkin" or justified is probably better left alone for now.
