There is a lot of great thinking and great ideas in this thread.
I would like to offer something more philosophical. The beautiful phrase in the OP, "living abundantly," reminds me of these kinds of abundance:
Sunsets, walks in the woods, skipping rocks on the water, holding hands, laughing, smiling at babies and puppies, greeting neighbors, calling friends, cultivating human contact in all forms, eating good stuff not garbage, reading good things, filling your mind with worthy thoughts, exercise....

Some things can be false economies. For example the glaucoma screening test is a little puff of air to each eyeball - takes about a minute to administer. Much better to know early on if you are borderline for glaucoma when it can be treated. Left untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness.
And glaucoma is only one example. So going to the eye doc is about much more than just getting the right prescription for glasses.

Most ophthalmologists no longer do the "puff.". The new procedure is a lot less uncomfortable.
Personally I never found the puff uncomfortable. But if there is a better way, so much the better. My original point remains true.
Actually, it is that procedure that has discouraged many from getting their eyes examined according to several doctors that I have talked to. I found that it took several tries each time to keep from blinking.
