Ok, yes, my mother has been to Greenville with a friend and they liked what they saw. Seems like an interesting place where a lot of people are moving to, maybe even more so then Asheville NC. Better for veterans in SC I think too. I don't think I read much great stuff about Spartanburg though, from what I recall. Which is close to Greenville. I will keep Greenville in mind though, and continue to research it. Seems like people are loving on Greenville a lot.......
Fayetteville, AR would put you in the Ozarks which we believe is the place to be. Nature is abundant, you get four distinct seasons - none particularly harsh - friendly people and great prices. Taxes are lower across the state line in SW MO so you might wasn't to consider it as well. Good luck!

You like the PNW, yet very few choices are listed (2). There are plenty of cheap properties, but you have to dig for them. (don't wait for them to hit the market, that will be too late)
Fairfield or Rockford, WA
Very quiet and peaceful and plenty of rural places.
If you can deal with heat and humidity (and bugs and hurricanes and stuff), the SE and SC USA will be least expensive for rural properties.
240k can buy quite a bit of nice acreage outside of NW Arkansas, Branson MO, Floyd VA, most of southern WV, outside of Charleston, outside of Lexington, and etc.....with a nice home sitting on it to boot....I been researching. Idaho Falls can get you a huge 3000 sq ft home on at least one or two acres in that range even. They tend to build homes large there in Idaho Falls it seems. The areas outside of Branson, beautiful up dated homes sitting on 3 to 10 acres parcels all day long for under 240k even. Even upstate NY. There are huge amounts of places I can do very well and get acreage in that price range. Just have to avoid, the pricier states and parts of the USA. Yes, I am concerned about tornadoes and etc....but I guess it is a part of reality that I have to weigh out. I am actually weary of western WA, and as much as I love the PNW, it is a time for a change.
Since Asheville is on your list, maybe you'd consider eastern TN, specifically the Tri-Cities area (home to Mountain Home Veterans Medical Center) or the area around Knoxville. I thought the three cities of the Tri-City area were just OK, but the surrounding countryside is gorgeous.

There are many cheap places in the USA I can buy a nice home on a couple of acres. Eastern TN is one of them too....but not sure, due to what I have read about the area, being very distant to outsiders, and etc...and crime issues and folks just not liking it there once they moved there. That is just from some stuff on some threads on the area on CD that I read. I have no idea, just going on what I read on CD sometimes about places that folks move to. Seems like I read the most bad stuff about FL once folks relocate there, and after a few years, they seem to want to fly out of there fast. Asheville is getting more and more expensive fast it seems, so housing wise, it is still a possibility, but I keep reading that stuff is expensive in NC, overall. I could be wrong though.

Yep, it's a crap shoot. I live in rural Kansas in what I consider a very small town. I met some newcomers from CA a few years ago who moved to an even smaller town 5 miles down the road. They drove themselves nuts, like many of us, trying to decide where to go. Finally, they resorted to the "close eyes and stab a pin in the map" method. I don't know how that worked out for them, or even if they're still around. They probably hadn't heard about city data, lol. Good luck in finding a place that calls your name.
