You need to lok at overall cost of living becuase governments often vary now they get their taxes from you. Also if the property cost twice as much in one area than another then they can tax less on property. Some states also have income tax. I would be very careful not to move to a place that has few medical facilities close by as this is important as you grow older.
Gregory, I guess this is the one thing that we didn't want to win. But on the other hand we also won the best salary. So I guess they think we can afford the high property taxes.
So true Jersey....They know they can't get blood out of a turnip down here....I would guess we are near the bottom on the personal income list...but the quality of life is uh... let's just say...beyond description lol

High wages, high taxes and high Cost-of-Living commonly go hand-in-hand.
I am fine with my $1.05 per acre property tax here in Maine. My county has the highest property tax, of any county in this state. If I had moved to any other county, I would not be paying taxes this high. But at that time, I did not understand the difference.
So long as you can own a nice home on a hundred acres with river frontage and keep your taxes below $400, your doing okay, in my book.

I think you need to look at Texas taxes more carefully.
The homestead in Texas exempts $15,000 of the value from taxation; not usually a cut approaching 50%.
Over 65 exempts another $10,000 from taxation and a school tax freeze (but not terminated).
The $15K and $10K you quoted are "at least" in Texas. Many counties and municipalities, including mine, go above and beyond.
