I read that Fredricksburg has more millionaires that any other area in Texas. Wow, that is saying a lot. Could that really be true? Doesn't look like a really wealthy area from what I could tell from their website.

I lived in Las Vegas for 20 years and currently live in Phoenix. Been here 15 years. Moving back to Vegas as soon as my house sells. Phoenix is ok. Hot in the summer but when you see everyone else in the country digging out of snow you will appreciate the weather. However Las Vegas is home for me. Remember Phoenix is hot in the summer. But you will survive. There are great senior places especially in Sun City Arizona. Just visit the area you want to live in. Phoenix has some really nice area's and some not so nice. However Phoenix is a little to conservative for me and Vegas is way more fun.

If you want folks to come visit you, then you want to be in a place with a full-grown airport, not a dinky flying field.

That is good advice, and I have heard it before. So I started doing it a couple years before I plan to retire (2016). First I am doing a 1-week visit, and then a longer visit with the last couple contenders. I have already ruled out one town that I thought I would like, and was highly impressed with another (Tampa-Sarasota) that will make my short list to visit longer. Realistically, I won't move until a year after I retire. That gives me time to prep and sell my house and visit more places. I have lots of large hobby equipment and several specialty cars, so moving will be a big deal.

Engineman, I had to chuckle when I read your reply. I think it all depends on where a person comes from. Where I come from, I suspect almost all of the airports fall under the "dinky flying field." As a result, I am ONLY looking at the Phoenix, Vegas, Dallas regions because those are the only warm-weather direct flights from Rapid City, SD.

But...again because of where I come from, I consider "ideal" any location within a 2-3 hour drive time from one of those warm-weather airports.

Naturally you've receive a variety of options and opinions. You'll have to decide what works best for you, your lifestyle, and your budget. It's all relative.

As far as weather: any place you target - visit in the worst weather season. For example, don't visit Phx in January and rave about the perfect weather. Same as a severe winter weather area in the summer.

What about health insurance? If you have a Supplemental or Advantage Plan you'll need to know what's available (and it's determined by zip code). This is the website to help in that department: https://www.medicare.gov/find-a-plan...ookieSupport=1

Again, you'll receive suggestions based on other's personal preferences. That is okay, but while some may claim an area is way too hot in the summer, the next person will counter that viewpoint.

It is hard for people who have never experienced weeks where it doesn't get above zero to understand that 100+ doesn't compare. When it is hot you still have early morning or late evening where you can be outside for a bit. The depth of a Minnesota winter (or Dakota) is 24/7 lousy, and I am not even mentioning it is dark at 5pm or the non stop wind. It is amazing how when you grow up it doesn't affect you that much but as I get older the winters get longer and colder.

^^^ The winters definitely feel like they last forever. I spend more time sleeping through the winter months and the constant gray skies really get me down!

tijuca, did you try using the Find My Spot quiz? (do a google search). In my search for finding a place in Arizona, I've also checked the climates in each area of the state, so I've narrowed my search down to two areas in Arizona. Now I'm having a hard time waiting until I can get to Arizona and find my place in the sun

Deelighted,
I have taken the quiz...numerous times. Apparently, I want to manipulate the results! (Yes, I know, some might call that cheating and, of course, they would be right!)

My struggle is the airline one. I truly need direct flights from Rapid City, SD to within 150 miles from wherever I reside. That basically leaves me with Colorado, Arizona, Nevada and possible the region near St. George, Utah. Colorado is either to cold or to expensive. Actually, I could go to Minneapolis-St. Paul area but that seems sort of self-defeating as far as brrr the weather goes.

When I take the quiz the honest girl's way, most of my results end up being in New Mexico or Louisiana. Seems odd...
