I think it always well to know facts and often HR people are not generally experts on insurance or retirement plans including pension terms. my employer actually hired experts yearly for retirement meetings. Fact is tho they were not well attended by many.
Well, don't forget HR is there for the benefit of the COMPANY, their employer.
It's great to have an HR department. But don't get lulled into thinking they're always on YOUR side.
To the OP, thank you for the information. I am so sorry about your husband.
Sometimes, even a small change can make a big difference. One of my fellow teachers was diagnosed with a very swift moving form of cancer just before school started one year. She came to work on the first official workday (no students were present as it was a meeting & work in your classroom day) to remove personal items from her classroom and to do needed paperwork regarding her illness.
Because, she attended that one day of work in the new school year, she was able to use her accumulated sick days which meant that she had a salary until long term disability started at the two month period. If she had gone in one day earlier (during summer vacation) she would not have been able to get that two months worth of salary (her accumulated sick days).
Sadly, it was not HR who suggested that she do that but a fellow teacher who thought that it would be financially beneficial (and it certainly was). She passed away later that fall.
Of course, there is a lot of difference between jobs and benefits, but as the OP pointed out be sure to check what is best for your and your family in your situation.
