Of course I can also remember punch cards - jeeze I'm old
Ooh, I loved punch cards!!! I worked at a Credit Bureau in the early 70's and I got to actually "punch" the cards . It was so fun and I loved the noise. I'm so easily amused.

Yep, been there and done that. I paid an insane amount of money for my first PC, but hubby already had a home built box we were using for bulletin boards and such.
The artistic among us used to make up pictures using characters, but some BBs would not allow them. Some programs just compress them so they made no sense. I still have a small eagle in my signature line on my e-mails. I miss Eudora.

I went from Eudora to Thunderbird, which is pretty similar. Except, after two moves and losing all of my ISP-based email accounts (twice), I switched over to gmail. Gmail works with Thunderbird but not in a way that is satisfactory to me.
I remember when I had a 300 baud modem to connect to work. You had to listen to the phone line hash every time it connected and woe be to you if someone picked up the phone while the session was going.
I also remember paying $6,000+ for a laptop - it was an old Compaq, I think, and it was heavy and clunky. The screen was probably not even as big as my present 11" Mac Air.

Usually it was the storage it took for compressed data, since you had to string out hard drives together to make a big one. Most had a file limit for uploading for that same reason. Its amazing with all the storage today we still don't do much different on boards than we did back then.
But... I MISS taglines. Makes me thing of making myself a new file to start using them again. It would be neat if current boards were set up to have a space for them.
I was thinking about how message board can be a real force too. Back when Jericho was on CBS, those of us who were dedicated fans spent much time on the CBS board. I remember being on when the last first season episode had aired and CBS had cancelled it. We had a bunch of people handing out, leaving comments and chatty messages, and then someone said WE shouldn't let them do this. What could we do...
This message on their board at about 2/3am became a force by the next day, and people with experience who could offer real guidence made suggestions under their screen name. And while it was a short season we did get one, and the whole planning and encouraging was on the CBS board, most of us waiting for it to go down while we buried their planning week for the new season in personal letters. If you ever want to make a meaningful complaint, find an exec's address and WRITE and mail a personal letter. They have to open and read them.
I wonder what those of us who were back there in the 80's on our favorite boards would have thought about the potential a message board could have. Imagine if Star Trek tos had been on with real computers available to guide their mail campaign.
In fear of dating myself, I can remember 300 baud and The Well. Of course I can also remember punch cards - jeeze I'm old
I learned to program on my first job out of college, on what I think was an IBM 7094, and we used punch cards.
We didn't have DSL where I live until about 2005, so it was dial up till then. We still have only the slowest DSL and not enough lines for the neighborhood.
