Well, after reviewing my options and seeing my retired pay estimate. I decided to put in for a job in my home town, for the same agency I work for now. Never really expected an interview much less getting the job.

Short story: great interview, got the job, they are paying for a portion of my move from WA to TX.

I didn't think at my age, 59, I could be this excited about starting a new job, but I am.

And I get to add to my 401, SS etc. And I'll be in my home where I was going to retire.

And NO MORE 3 hour daily commutes. It will be maybe 20 minutes round trip.

Blessed!

Congratulations! Working to age 62 will bump up your FERS retirement another 2-3% of high three salary depending on years of service. Every little bit helps.

From the thread title I thought this might be about someone deciding NEVER to retire...not retiring at 60 -- which is not exactly an outlier decision. I don't think most people retire that "early" anyway.

Don't get me wrong I'm glad the OP has a new job to be excited about. But it's more like she's decided not to retire "as soon as she other wise MIGHT be able to retire." So perhaps she's delaying retirement.

OP, do you NEVER plan to retire, or you're just deciding not to -- right now?

That was my impression too. I started working here at age 58, and expect to stay until 67 or 70 and get another pension. I think in this case the person really just changed jobs, but rather than just quit, had enough years in to take an early retirement. Real retirement to me is when you start taking SS, and after that any new job becomes a "retirement job."

The thread title was probably meant to be a "teaser." I mean who would decide never to retire (yes, I know there are some) so it gets your attention. I thought it was very clever. And the OP has posted several times about her job unhappiness so many of us are aware that she had planned to retire and move back to Texas but can now delay her retirement.

Congratulations! But please keep it all in perspective,

After age 60, you won't have that many good years left. Only you know at what ages your parents and grandparents began to decline. Don't trade time for money...you'll never win that one.

Remember: when your time is up, no amount of money will buy you another nano-second!
