I retired from government work at 52 because it got too ugly and political...and because I was lucky enough to fit into a retirement formula and escape. I considered working as a contracor on grants or special projects but the guy that would have hired me had a heart attack and was out of commission for a few months. I saw that as a sign from above and kept on walking. I later worked part-time for 7 years as a city planner -- a job I really enjoyed but it was only for pocket money.
The first time I tried to retire at 56 and my job called me back. I worked pm and nights for the last year and a half until the new manager insisted that I work 12 hours. I retired in July at 58. Time will tell if I can handle it this time. So far so good
56 from the Federal Government after 35.5 years; 59 from contracting. I'd consider a part time job, more for engagement, don't need it which is a nice place to be.
62 I was 6 wks shy of my 63rd. Nearly 6 years now and I'm still getting used to the idea that I don't have to get up and go to work nor do I have to answer to anyone! Gotta Love It!!!

I decidedly love it. Don't even have a wife to answer to any longer.
