My opthalmologist recommended Occuvite but when I took a bottle of Equate vision formula with lutein to him, he looked at the ingredients and said "that'll do".
I take it as a preventive, don't have any risk factors. If you have risk factors you should ask your doc and not us what you should take.

Biscuitmom, what's in Equate vision formula, or are there too many ingredients to list?

2 mg lutein, various vitamins (A,C,E) and minerals (zinc, selenium, copper). My doc was primarily interested in the lutein content.

Thanks for taking the trouble. I was curious to compare the ingredients with the senior men's multivitamin/multimineral which I take. It does have all those ingredients, but the amount of lutein is much, much smaller - 300 mcg.

Of course multivitamins are not specifically formulated for eye health, and whether that small amount of lutein is significant I do not know.

According to my ophthalmologist, the brand doesn't matter, as long as the supplement meets the AREDS standard.

Well Shone Moon (love that Shakespeare Reference) --

This is for my Mother in Law, and her Doctor recommended either Preservision or Occuvite, along with another supplement called i-caps. I was looking for anyone's first hand experience with one or the other to pass on to Mom. Thanks for your help.

Lutein seems to be the main ingredient for Eye Health. The Vitamin Shoppe has some formularies that include things like Bilberry and Gingko. There are some forms that include the entire daily multi-vitamin spectrum.

I think it simply comes down to the cost per pill. As long as it contains the recommended 10 mg of Lutein and 2 mg Zeaxanthin.

I take Preservation twice a day as a preventative measure, but I also take Bilberry and a high-dose (40 mg), high-quality lutein supplement. To protect my eyes, cost is no object; I can always play cheaper golf balls. My ophthalmologist is surprised every year that, at 65, I have not had any of the problems that I "should" have had with my extremely bad vision. I used to drink large quantities of carrot juice (and actually still do, simply because I like it), but kale and blueberries are better for vision issues. Hopefully some form of treatment for macular degeneration will be available before too long.

This may sound like a joke but about 2 years ago my dogs were developing cataracts. The vet recommended Ocuvite with Lutein because she said that she has seen very good results. Their cataracts have NOT gotten any worse in that time. We take it also.
