My neighbor has been on SSI Supplement Insurance since she had a series of strokes a couple of years ago. She's now 65 and still receiving it. Shouldn't it have switched to straight SSI by now or does she wait until 67? My understanding was it automatically switched at 65. I told her to call the office in Fergus. I just don't know want to give incorrect information.
SSI is not social security it is Welfare and it does not convert to anything else. It is just administered by the Social Security office.
IS 65 her full retirement age? or is it 66? She has to apply for her regular social security retirement benefits
and the longer she waits to begin those, or Widows benefits if applicable the more she will get per month.

Thank you. I will keep encouraging her to call the SS office here.
is she on SSI or SSDI? If she's on SSI, as already stated her it won't convert to Social Security, that program is needs based not earnings based. If she had adequate earnings she would have been on SSDI which automatically converts at 66

Thanks again to both of you. I wil tell her. It is SSI. We talked at length & she couldn't understand why I was getting SSDI at 62 & she wasn't getting SS at 65.
What a good question? If a person has been on SSI between ages 18-62 years old, what happens when he or she turns 62 years old ? Does that person has a retirement?

"SSI benefits also are payable to people 65 and older without disabilities who meet the financial limits.
People who have worked long enough may also be able to receive Social Security disability or retirement benefits as well as SSI."
