I am retired and out of shape.
I want to get more active and lose 15 pounds.

One thought is that if I had a treadmill at home it would be convenient to do short
walks in the morning and at night as I work up in time/speed/incline..

Has anyone found that a treadmill was a good
solution to encourage daily walking...

It seems it would be nice to walk in any weather, at any time of day and
in any clothes I have on...

Can't offer anything specific, but I do know that treadmills are one of those things that "you get what you pay for". There are expensive ones and there are inexpensive ones. There is a pretty strong correlation between expensive/quality and inexpensive/junk.

I had one for many years. Can't remember the manufacturer, but I understand that it was the same model as used in a movie with Goldie Hawn. It was pretty expensive, even though purchased used, and weighed a "ton". It was no lightweight. Didn't fold up either. Once set up, there it was to stay. It was a good unit and was used often. However, there just isn't anything like walking in a park or in the neighborhood.

What I'm trying to say is that if you invest in an inexpensive treadmill, it will soon make its way into the garage and someday to the Salvation Army. A good, quality treadmill will be much more enjoyable to use, and thereby encourage you to stick with it.

Good luck.

We used a treadmill for over 10 years. DH was a regular user and I was not as regular, but I did use it. I do think it is helpful, but using it doesn't benefit the entire body.

DH and I have learned to love visiting a community gym. There are lots of retired folks there in the mornings, and we are all engaged in strengthening ourselves and keeping ourselves healthy. I walk a track and I also use the machines for my strengthening and conditioning. When I use the recumbent elliptical, I try to get my hear rate up past 125. I find that the exercises on the machines have helped with back pain and overall strength and stamina.

I do not think you can lose weight simply by doing treadmill walking. You can tighten muscles by doing walking and other exercises, as I have discovered. But you will have to make changes in your diet to lose weight.

As to clothes, I have to admit I like having fitness garments which I put on to work out. They have comfortable things now, that are a pleasure to wear.

Get a dog.

Never once has one of my dogs not wanted to go for a walk.

Take the dog to the park. You'll get fresh air. You'll meet people.

Precor. They are not cheap but have a great feel to them and are durable. We have two at work and never was on one until two years ago and now I go in at 5:30 to do them every morning. I really think this is one area that if your going to invest in to do it right. I am sure there are other quality brands but his one I know.

I like the sog idea or walking outside but this I can do no matter the weather and whenever I want.

I agree with jack_pine they are not cheap unless you go cheap and then you will not like it or the results of the attempt at exercise. I suggest a dog as one person says. Even better a membership in a fitness center. Most are reasonable now with a 10 to 15 dollar a month membership.
