When this post started I wondered if there would be people who were hurt if their names were not mentioned. To do my part to prevent that, I chose not to name names.
I think I would find it creepy if someone came into my store and said they know who I am on C-D. I think I would stop posting.
I loved meeting riverbird. Turns out we grew up in the same area and it's a wonder our paths never crossed. For some reason the place where you grew up really seems to shape you so we had a lot in common. Although I am normally quiet and shy, we talked for hours!
I can't even list all the people I'd like to meet. Such curiosity about what they would be like in person! I can even picture a big meetup somewhere--and I bet a lot of the people we think we'd hit it off with wouldn't be the ones we really would end up being drawn to. You never can tell.
I've only met one CD person about eight years ago -- a visitor from France I talked to on CD who came to my small town and we spent a few days together. He couldn't speak English and I couldn't speak French....but we managed with the help of a pocket dictionary and a little sign language and a scribbled "Pictionary" note or two. It was an interesting experience. We had a lot in common (retired from criminal justice work, he was divorced and I was a widower, both had kids, etc.) I recall he was a chain smoker...not that common anymore here in the US. He was not much impressed with small town America. It was Halloween, which he was a little freaked about. I took him to a corn maze and he was totally confused with the whole experience. We finally went to the Winston Churchill memorial in Fulton Missouri and he was enthralled. There was an exhibit on WW-I trench warfare which took place not too far from his home. The Christopher Wren church (St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury) was impressive for him as well. We still keep in touch around new years day every year.
I would be honored to have a sit-down with banjomike who frequents the Idaho forums. That guy is a walking encyclopedia and has probably forgotten more about Idaho history than all that is written about the subject in the Library of Congress. 'Mtn. States Resident' is another interesting fellow. And, just about the whole bunch of regulars in the Wyoming forum. I can envision them getting together and just 'shooting the breeze' around the campfire until the wee hours of the mornings. Fascinating bunch with great comradery!
I was extremely active on a once hyperactive forum, now almost defunct (Roadfly Z3) and met about 100 of the posters there at a an annual gathering. And everyone was super! Just about 95% as I imagined. I'm also active now on an audio fourum and everyone I've met has also been very nice, just like their posts. I'm not a chatty person so I don't know what I would talk about with anyone from here. We've discussed anything I might be interested in talking about regarding retirement. Unlike forums that are about a specific hobby or interest.
I haven't met anyone from CD but a whole group of us from a Las Vegas board have had many get-togethers in Vegas over the years. It all started around 2000 and we all have been friends ever since.
Back then it did seem a little creepy meeting people from the internet. You just didn't know. We quickly saw that everyone in the group (except for one guy) were just regular people that liked going to Vegas.
Now, some 16 years later, we've all gotten older, some have passed on, and some can't make the meets anymore. Our group has gotten smaller but we're still good friends.
There are quite a few I would like to meet in person but I hesitate to name them because I don't want others to feel left out. :-( Most of them don't live anywhere near me however so I doubt it would ever happen.
I have a good-sized handful of people whom I find interesting. I'm not going to name names because I'm afraid I'll leave someone out. These things always feel like popularity contests to me.
I haven't met anyone from CD but there was a forum, closed now, that I belonged to for over ten years and many of us traveled all over to meet each other. We sent each other gifts and even took a cruise together!
We were quite diverse as well but we all had a common interest in a particular radio program. Have to say that for me there were no unpleasant surprises in my face-to-face meetings. There were a few in private messages.
