People I knew who we're living near me retired in Oregon and Colorado. Not sure price still low there or not but I think they are reasonable mike. Colorado is zone 7 and Oregon is 8 or 9. Gardening zone.
If you define mild as not getting too cold but hot summers ok then check out Sherman and denison texas. Both are roughly 50 population and 10 miles aparr. Near lake texoma and about an our from Northern dallas suburbs for your city fix. Can be at dfw airport in an hour and a quarter. Good economies safe and good weather other than summers when it's hot as hades. But not so hot I can't play golf all summer.
Another less expensive option is durant oklahoma. It's 20 miles from denison so just across the state line. It's a nice growing college town with lots of entertainment options with a good sized casino there. It's less than 2 hours from dallas downtown and the airports too. Oklahoma has income tax but super low property tax compare to texaa. Cost of living is less in oklahoma and durant is one of the best fast growing towns in oklahoma. It's population counting immediate suburb areas is around 25k.

I haven't retired there, nor researched it, as we're happy where we are, but I recently spent some time in Las Cruces, NM & found it to be very charming for it's small size. Nice looking houses, big town amenities it seemed & read articles about how many people are retiring there. Beautiful scenery.
Depends on what you mean by mild weather. You can certainly buy a house or condo for under $300,000 in Fort Myers, Florida IF you don't mind hot and humid weather from June-October. It rarely gets cold enough to put the heat on and if it does, it is only at night. It always warms up during the day to high 60's or low 70's even during a cold snap. However we are pretty far down the peninsula so it will take you a good 6 hours just to get out of the state from here. Lots of snowbirds in the fall/winter which makes the traffic aggravating. People think hurricanes when they hear Florida but where I live in SW Florida, we have only had two hurricanes since 1960 and the last one wasn't even a direct hit.
However I don't know if I would call this area "small" anymore. There are certainly a lot of small towns in northern Florida with more of a four seasons climate. We have no sales tax on food and no state tax.
Someone mentioned Oklahoma but I always think tornados when anybody mentions those areas.
If the terms are incompatible or contradictory, then poster TwoByFour used the term "oxymoron" correctly. He is saying that in his opinion, the three conditions are incompatible and contradictory. Therefore, if you do not agree, then you should say, "No, I think such places can be found" instead of implying that he doesn't know what an oxymoron is.

The crime looks rather high in Sherman and Denison.
You need to define low crime. What's low to me may be unreasonable to you.
Low crime to me would be a place where my wife could go to the ATM at 10:00 or 11:00 at night, and me not worry about her. Not sure if such a place exists, but that would be my definition of loa crime.
You must be kidding. Thanks for biggest laugh of the day. I live in a reasonable safe, it's rated very safe, but I wouldn't do that even.
