We all have these fears; but they become more likely to give us food for thought as we age. Like almost everyone, I hope to just not wake up someday when my time here is done. But, not everyone is so lucky. Among the life ending scenarios we most fear, which is the worst in your mind?
Parkinson's is about as bad as it gets. But I knew a guy who had some weird muscle disease. His limbs were all twisted almost useless, but his mind was sharp and clear. All he could do was lay in bed and watch tv. The aid even had to change channels for him. That's the worst I've seen.
I think ALS has to be one of the worst. Lou Gehrig's disease.

My boyhood best friend died of ALS. He was diagnosed at age 40 and lasted 9 years which is about 5 more than the average. His last few years were brutal. Paralyzed from the neck down. Wheelchair. Tracheotomy with a machine breathing for him. His wife is a pediatric ICU nurse so she never got to escape care giving. It ripped her apart, too.
I was at Mass General with him and his wife when he got the diagnosis. I did some soul searching about my own life and opted to take 20 months off.
Yes, my friend's son in his 40s had ALS also. He opted to move from TX to Oregon so he could die there on his own terms. He drank the cocktail and went to sleep permanently.
