Mine went in steps: filed in November; ended last job in January; SS deposit coming in April.
THAT is the day I will celebrate...when that money goes in the bank. I will then go out and get a wonderful seafood meal the likes I have not had in years! Yum!
I didn't go to work that week and really enjoyed that. I smiled every time I remembered having paid off the mortgage the week before. I was sad when I recalled that we had to have both our little chihuahua and our parrot put down the week before that.
When the house was sold, I gave 30 days notice, then my wife and I and the two cats took off in a small RV. We spent some time in Williamsburg, traveled through North Carolina, the Skyline drive and returned to NY for an additional good bye dinner with friends. We stopped in Baltimore for my daughter's graduation and then went directly to South Dakota to change residency, update drivers licenses and registration. After that we spend two years in the Western US and Canada, mainly in the National Parks.
I'm retiring May 31st. In June, I'm either going to head east for a few weeks to the Carolinas on vacation, or I might head north to the Maritime Provinces and put off a Carolina trip until the weather is cool.
When I discovered I had been "involuntarily retired" with no prior notice, I was already on vacation. I never returned home but moved the next day to the Gulf Coast. Then later, to So. America.
My first week of retirement I slept. I was actually able to sleep sound for the first time in over 30 years. I went to movie matinees, went fishing, had a beer at lunch. It was great!
